| CLASSIC: Solitary lanes, panoramic views, an art deco airport and Eccles cakes on the Bluebell line.... Just plenty of Sussex countryside, several attractions to keep your mind occupied and, best of all, multiple opportunities for refreshment stops.
CLASSIC ride with just one tough (but oligatory to say you have!) climb of Ditchling Beacon towards the end, so compact is fine but not essential. Rolling Sussex Weald (one climb) but a few deceptively tough drags. BIKE SHOPS: Brighton - Rayment Cycles 01273 697617 and Baker Street Bikes 01273 675754; Worthing - The Bike Store 01903 206311 and Quest Adventure 01903 573700. INFO: Brighton 0906 7112255. |

| [CYCLING CLASSIC] Iron Horse Classic 2004, Colorado (US).
Sample the typically American atmosphere and experience the vast, wild and overpowering natural environment of Colorado. This 119 km route from Durango to the ski village of Ouray runs through the town of Silverton. The well-known 'Iron Horse Classic' takes place along part of this route. This pleasure ride continues along the Million dollar Highway through the Red Mountains to the finish line. It is a tranquil journey. Now and then a lorry races along the wide asphalt highway. The first section of the trip is flat, ideal for warming up. En route to Silverton you ride through moutain-side spruce woods and climb the Coal Bank Pass and the Molas. Both mountains are at elevations higher than 3050m. It is an easy ascent since the gradients are uniform and not too steep. Then you pass the highest point, the Red Mountain Pass. The view across the jagged mountaintops of San Juan is spectacular. The road then branches off and becomes the famous Million Dollar Highway (20 miles). This road got its name from the bottom layer of asphalt that is mixed with ore that contains gold. The road begins to wind dramatically. You cycle through the Red Mountains, rich in iron, along the arrow-straight wall of Uncompahgre Gorge, through tunnels and past pelting waterfalls. The 90m high Box Canyon Falls is close to the finish line. The water plunges rapidly down the waterfall, across dark limestone into a deep gorge. |

| [CYCLE TOUR] This 115 km ride takes you through some of the most beautiful parts of South Africa. Starting at the coastal town of Gordon’s Bay, you head down south on the easy, slightly undulating beach road towards Pringle Bay, with staggering views out over the Indian Ocean and the surrounding mountains. After returning to Gordon’s Bay, you take the harder roads inland to the world famous vineyards of Stellenbosch and the colonial town of Franschhoek. Here you start the 7 km long climb to Franschhoek Pass (6% average) to finish at the top. |
