[CYCLE TOUR] The Saguaro cactus is probably the most well known icon of the South West of the US. They often live for 100's of years, only gaining branches after 80 years or so of growth. This well known 23km loop ride, just to the east of Tucson in Arizona, takes you past many that were there long before the area was colonised. You start the ride with a bit of a warm-up outside the park but then turn right into a single lane, one-way, road who's ever changing grades meander through the park and eventually lead back to the toll box at the entrance to the park. There are some very short sections of steep grades, but on the whole this should be a fairly easy ride.

[CYCLE TOUR] Arizona Trail from Apache Junction (east of central Phoenix) to the end of the tarmac east of Tortilla Flat and the N Apache Trail. In times past a stagecoach route through the Superstition Mountains, it is named after the Apache Indians who once used this trail to move through the Mountains. The route has some hills & lots of grade changes but its also a fairly easy ride that should be within the realms of most riders.

An Expert ride as it's tough and hilly with several long and a few steep climbs. This needs a compact or triple gear and you'll have to stock up as only Princetown, Yelverton and Tavistock have shops for food & drink. Hot Pursuit Cycles in Totnes (01803 865174) and Dartmoor Cycles in Tavistock (01822 618178) can support last minute needs.

It's a great climb up to la Berarde (all 17-miles of the D530), even better is the way back, one hardly has to pedal to move forward - it's almost entirely downhill. Of course, that means that on the way out....
