The last stage of Le Tour, with its prestigious finish on the Champs-Elysees, will also be the year’s shortest at 102.5 kilometres - indeed you have to go back to 1989, to the stage between Bourg d’Oisans and Villard-de-Lans, to find a shorter one. It was only 91.5 kilometres long and was won by Laurent Fignon. He thought that the fifty seconds lead he held over Greg LeMond would be sufficient for victory in Paris, but in the end, he lost by eight!

[TRAINING WITH THE PROS] A flat course added to the TACX (T1957.13) collection. Riding with Marianne Vos, a World Champion many times over, and her team mate Annemiek van Vleuten this is a circuit of approximately 75 km (47 miles) through the so-called ‘Land van Heusden en Altena’, not far from former TDF host town Den Bosch. A beautiful, rural area with lots of waterways, dykes, long stretches, trees, forests and typical Dutch wind mills, bridges and farms along the way – and not a single stoplight.

The further south and west you are in Cheshire, the quieter and more rural the roads tend to be. All the more surprising them, that the idyllic green pastures seen on this ride also extend from a once-secret cold-war nuclear bunker to romantic castle gardens. MEDIUM ride; BIKE SHOPS: Nantwich, AF Cycles 01270 628870 and Tommy Grays Cycles 01270 629139; INFO: Nantwich Tourist Centre 01270 610983.
