Start/End point is the parking lot for the Nashua River Rail Trail in Ayer Ctr. This is a rural route with very few places to fuel up, and you'll have to be creative for nature breaks. The Brookline Village Store at about the halfway point has food and drinks, but no restroom facilities. I rode this route one day while I was out exploring the area. It is now one of my favorite rides, and a great workout depending on how hard you want to go. The hills are long, but generally not steep, and there are lots of places to sprint. My method is to use the big chainring for some of the hills, and sprint on all the flats, going all out on Bishop Road near the end. The roads are in very good to excellent condition for the entire ride. Most of the route has very light traffic (on weekends anyway), save for the times when it runs along Rte 111 in spots.

This route is mostly flat and car-free and is 5 miles so it should take less than an hour at a very leisurely pace. A leisurely walker will cover a mile in 30 minutes and a brisk one will walk 3 miles per hour, so 5 miles per hour is not a very fast pace for a bike. To avoid tire punctures, ensure that your tires are well inflated, and if possible use puncture resistant tires. Otherwise, bikes can go a long way without ending up with a problem. If you ride this roundtrip, you'll get in an hour and a half of light exercise without working up a sweat.

| My wife and I rode this in 2009 as part of a cross-country tour (west to east). From Taunton to Buzzard's Bay, the route is quite nice - generally a moderate traffic volume and good roads. As you approach the Bourne Bridge, the traffic increases substantially. Be EXTREMELY CAREFUL as you take the ramp onto the bridge - you need to get on the bike path/sidewalk before you get close to the bridge. Otherwise you will find yourself - as we did - prevented from reaching the sidewalk by a chain link fence. You will be forced to either ride in the traffic lane or get onto the sidewalk while in the traffic lane. Either way, that is a very scary experience.

My wife and I rode this in 2009 as part of a cross-country tour. There are several very very steep climbs in the Berkshire Mountains but it is a scenic and low traffic route. Note that the stretch from Northampton to Amherst is on a bike path.

My wife and I rode this route in 2009 as part of a cross-country tour. There are several stretches along busy Hwy 9 with no shoulder, but otherwise it is a scenic and low traffic route. Note that the initial stretch out of Amherst is on a bike path. There are a lot of hills on the route and some of them are quite steep.
