|
26.7km |
|
| Locations of interest:
Bubble gum: Wrigley Building, 400 N. Michigan Ave.
Seltzer: Jewell Water Co., 557 W. Fulton. Sold seltzer to speakeasies during prohibition.
Beer: Schoenhofen Brewery, 18th and Canalport. Brewed Edelweiss beer; during prohibition, they invented Green River to stay in business.
Soda: Filbert's Root Beer, 3430 S. Ashland. Last of the independent Chicago soda bottlers.
Decomposition: Bubbly Creek, 35th St. bridge (1300 W). Don't fall in! Formerly open sewer for the Stockyards (1875-1971). By the 1990s the only living metazoans in the creek were huge numbers of bloodworms feeding on the estimated two meters of rotting blood in the bed of the hypoxic creek.
Bubbles and Bikes: Bubbly Dynamics, 1048 W. 37th - Home to Lloyd Cycles and formerly the Rat Patrol!
Soap: Stockyards Gate, 41st. and Peoria; home to Armour Soap Factory & Rendering Plant
Bubble Dancing: Burnham Park (24th -28th St. beach) was the location of the Century of Progress Midway, where Sally Rand did her bubble dance at the Chicago World's Fair (1933-34) until she was arrested after her bubble burst.

| A really nice bike path that takes you through a park, by a pond, Diversey Harbor, Fullerton, North Avenue and Oak Street Beaches, Navy Pier, Monroe Harbor, Buckingham Fountain and Grant Park and the Shedd Aquarium (Southernmost point is at the entrance to the Aquarium, from where you can take in a fantastic view of the city's best known buildings and parks) |

| Escape from Chicago. This route has a few difficult stretches getting through Hammond and Gary, with bad road surfaces and heavy traffic, but otherwise it is the fastest way out in the direction of Detroit. |

| I take this revised and slightly longer route home to avoid the busy streets in the dark. ALso, the roads seem rather busier in the evenings, so the route down Ohio saves me having to deal with it!
Some of the roads on this route leave something to be desired though, and you have to cross a level crossing... |
