| The penultimate day of La Vuelta a España 2011 may be decisive for the race if the times are tight in the general classifications.
On the day that will finally decide the winner of the 66th edition of the race, the streets of Bilbao will give the riders a hearty Agur for thirty-first time. While the last time in 1978 the stage route led to Amurrio, this time the peloton will head towards Vitoria. Before reaching the capital of Alava, riders will have to climb four mountain passes. The last, the Puerto de Urquiola, will offer the final judgement on La Vuelta 2011. |

| Now it's down to the nitty-gritty with rolling valleys and a mild homage to the “Ardennes Classics” following, as it does, part of the routes for the Fleche Wallonne and Liege-Bastogne-Liege. No big slopes here... yet, but it’s a rugged route on which all sorts of things could happen. |

| With the struggle for the final GC places probably all but over the focus should briefly fall to the sprinters. This stage is often capital to the team classification, so all the teams will be taking it seriously. People sometimes wonder why a team sets out to catch a breakaway. They often do it because there are riders from other teams in the leading group. If two riders from one team are ten minutes ahead of the pack, then this adds up to twenty minutes in the general team classification. Chasing the scraps of le Tour help keep this classic going and going... |

| Today the riders will have to tackle Col de Peyresourde (1, 1569m) from the start, Col d'Aspin (1, 1490m), Col du Tourmalet (HC, 2115m) and Col d'Aubisque (HC, 1709m), with the Aubisque pass some 60 kilometres from the finishing line, although the first 30 kilometres is descent before getting to grips with the valley bottom. It is the same route (except that the stage finish was in Mourenx) as in 1969 when Eddy Merckx was victorious after a 180-kilometre breakaway. |

[as of 01/03/2013] A fast and fairly flat day’s riding will bring you through Lincolnshire, parts of Nottinghamshire and into South Yorkshire. Passing the vast power stations on the banks of the River Trent, you cross the River Humber and enter North Yorkshire, loosely following the River Ouse into the ancient city of York. The home of the Rat Race is your home for the evening and represents the exact mid-point of the Challenge for all riders. whether you are an Expert or a Challenger, you will be getting your head down here for a few hours before continuing north-wards. You’re 200 miles from London and 200 miles from Edinburgh at this point. |

| Another unprecedented start, this time in the Castilla-La Mancha town of Almadén, which will mark the first mountain weekend of the race in Spain's Sistema Central. The stage, which does not have a categorized climb but is still a real leg-breaker, will favour the rouleurs and the brave looking for a breakaway.
Talavera de la Reina will host a stage finish for the fifth time on a good day for living in this Toledo town, particularly if the teams with specialists decide to show off in a sprint finish. |

| Unprecedented start from Sierra Nevada to reach one of the discoveries of La Vuelta 2010. The town Valdepeñas de Jaén will welcome the peloton back with open arms as it did last year with the arrival of Igor Anton in front of the race.
The finish line may catch more than one cyclist by surprise if they are not well positioned at the start of the second climb to Alto de Valdepeñas de Jaén (category 2). The explosive end with a 27% "wall" at just 500 metres to a finish line that will once gain be truly epic for fans and participants. |

| Some testing climbs (2, Col de Portet-d'Aspet, 1069m; 2, Col des Ares, 797m) and a long, fast, technical descent of Port des Bales (HC, 1755m) where positions can and probably will change.
The Port de Bales has only been climbed once, in 2007, before which there was no tarmac - laid as it was especially for le Tour. The pass is a fantastic sight, hard, not very wide and, once the riders reach the top, a good downhill rider can open up the gaps, because it really is a very tough descent. Many may 'fall' and see dreams end here. |

| More hills, but with added difficulty. The Cote de Laffrey (1, 886m) climb, on leaving Vizille, is very difficult. The Col du Noyer (2, 1664m) is very complicated. And the descent is winding and has had its fair share of incident in the past. |

| Stage 3 of Rat Race Road trip.
[as of 01/03/2013] From York, you will ride through the City Walls and into Old York, before departing to the North via the Vale of York, providing beautifully quiet and rural farm landscapes, with fast flat roads weaving throughout. As York Minster disappears from view on the horizon behind you, the Howardian Hills provide a bit of undulation which will warm the legs up for the distinctly less-than-flat miles up ahead. Although not mountainous, the undulating terrain of the Wear and Tyne valleys provide some testing riding. You approach the end of Stage 3 at Morpeth, just north of Newcastle. This is not the biggest mileage day but probably the toughest due to steep ascents so consider getting to the end of stage 3 a real milestone to completion of your Road Trip; you’re more than ¾ of the way to Edinburgh, you’ve done a fair few of the the ups-and-downs and you have nearly made the Scottish Border. |

| Following completion of the first week of competition, the race features two mountain stages before the time trial. To start, the last Saturday in August, an explosive stage with four categorised climbs. Puerto de Mijares (first), Collado Mediano and Hoyo de Guija (second) and San Lorenzo de El Escorial (third) complicate the stage before reaching the Madrid suburb of San Lorenzo de El Escorial. Although La Vuelta has often passed through the town, this will be the time first that their streets will host the finish line.
The finish in San Lorenzo, with ramps of 27 and 28%, may mark some differences in the pack if they have not completed the previous climbs. |
