[DOWNLOAD: CYCLING TOUR] The Aube Valley is ideal for a light ride or warm-up, because the route descends slightly while you are riding with the flow of the river L’Aube. The green, rural area and deserted villages add to the relaxed atmosphere of the French Champagne region. This route and associated Tacx video (T2055.05) is a remake of the first part (but about 6km further up river) of the Tacx Real Life Video from 2004 (T1956.07) which covers 78km of the Aube Valley.

At the mid-point of La Vuelta, and before rest day, the time-trialists will have their only chance to shine in this edition. The Bedford level, north of Ely, offers a flat 31km loop - once (or still) the subject of the 'Bedford Level Experiment' to prove the Earth was flat during the mid-1800's. The Flat Earth Society carried out numerous obsevations and calculations at this time to convince others of their beliefs. Ridng in this area one can see why they chose it ! GRADE: EASY (MEDIUM if you work at it!) and very, very flat; BIKE SHOPS: City Cycle Centre, Ely 01353 663131, Jim Harrison Cycles, Littleport 01353 862000; INFO: www.ely.org.uk

This is the only 'real' time-trial stage. The route will wind its way through the streets of Bordeaux for fifteen kilometres, with avenues and buildings to shelter the riders. Then suddenly, they will leave the city and arrive in the open countryside, amidst the vineyards, because they will be passing through the famous landmarks of the Haut Medoc wine-making region, such as Margaux, passing one chateau after another. The finish is magnificent. On the face of it, this time trial will merely fine-tune the classifications; there is no way the seventeenth-placed rider will grab first place. The last time trial when the Yellow Jersey changed hands on the penultimate day was in 2006, when Landis (3rd at the time behind Sastre) triumphed. However did he do that?
