This legendary route goes right through the Alps from south to north. Cordoba returns to La Vuelta after a two-year absence. The land between Úbeda, which debuts in the race, and the capital city of Cordoba seems conducive to a bunch finish as the sprinters in the peloton vie for the finish. The stage runs over 186 kilometres with a first passage through the city before the finish. The climb to Alto de San Jerónimo at just over 10 kilometres from the finish, a mountain pass that has already proven that it is hardy enough to challenge the possibilities of sprinters, will force the sprinters to be careful not to be cut off given that later there will be no room to bridge with the leaders.

The route is a rough triangle running from Oxford to Malmesbury to Chipping Campden and back to Oxford. The run out to Malmesbury is quite flat and quite fast. As we head north-ish from Malmesbury we come to the Cotswolds and the route gets hilly after Cirencester. The hills continue most of the way to Chipping Campden but after Chipping Campden, the terrain is gently rolling and more downhill than up. This is a really good ride through some lovely English countryside with views to match the hills. The controls are Malmesbury and Chipping Campden which both have good cafes and a choice of shops. There are also info controls at Shrivenham and Shipton-under-Wychwood, both garages with shops. sheet.

Another long stage, in a region that is often hot, includes Suc de Montivemoux (2, 1315m) and the day ends with the Laurent Jalabert (Cote de la Croix Neuve 2, 1047m) climb in Mende. Here a rapid transition to climbing is needed so punchy riders could steal a march on less able rivals who may not faulter but could easily show cracks.

This is a stage that will enable non mountain climbers to breathe easier, rest but if needed, could be of interest in the green jersey battle. There is not much left after this other than than some big mountain stages before the run in at the end through Bordeaux, Paris, and the Champs-Elysees. Not a kind year for sprinters.

After a well-deserved rest day and leaving the mountains of Asturias behind, a completely flat new transition day with favour the sprinters to move form the back of the pack to the front and contest for the finish line in Haro. This is the second time in the history of the race that this La Rioja town hosts a stage finish. This forst was in 1966 when Francisco Gabica took his first win. Villa Romana La Olmeda, in Pedrosa de la Vega (Palencia), one of the most important archaeological sites from Roman times, will receive the cyclists who have endured two tough weeks of competition since the start in Benidorm.

This is the main Willy Warmer route and goes directly to Pangbourne via Marlow and Henley. This is most suitable in poor weather conditions and for those riders who want to get home before dark. With an early start you will be past Henley before the shoppers are out in force. After Pangbourne we’re off across rolling downland via Peasemore to Hungerford for some lunch, and a dash for home via Kingsclere and Bramley before a final pit-stop at Winnersh. You’ll find that all the hard work has been done, as the second half of the of route is reasonably flat – virtually downhill from Kingsclere to Maidenhead! – apart from the final climb up to Chalfont St Peter.

Fluela and Stelvio Pass in a day - whew!! The Flüela Pass is a nice warm-up after leaving Davos in the Graubunden region of Switzerland. Fluele Pass starts from Susch, is 13 km long with an ascent of 957 m - avg. 7.4 %. The Passo dello Stelvio, the main event, is the highest pass in Italy. It is situated in the Alps Retiche, to the north-west of the Montuoso group of the Ortles-Cevedale. Many consider it scenically the nicest of all the Alpine passes. It is actually possible to climb the Stelvio from two different sides; west from Bormio and east from Prato, both in Italy. However, it is also possible to reach the Stelvio from Switzerland, namely from St. Maria in the north (the Passo Umbrail (2501 m)). From Bormio you can go to Mazzo di Valtellina, the starting point of the Mortirolo. The Passo dello Stelvio is situated in Lombardy and belongs to the Dolomites. From Bormio, the Passo dello Stelvio ascent is 21.5 km long. Over this distance, you climb 1533 m - avg. 7.1 %.
