This ride is hilly, with almost 5,000' of climbing, but it has some really nice sections, especially through Peacham. This is definitely the direction you want to ride it. You will be rewarded with a nice, long descent at the end.

The way to do this route is clockwise. The section from Island Pond to Norton is generally uphill, but no bad climbs. The road surface is bad for much of this stretch, but there's not a lot of traffic anywhere on this ride, so you can avoid most of the bad spots if you keep a sharp lookout. There are a couple of climbs between Norton and Canaan, but they're really not that bad and the descents are fast. The road here is quite good. The stretch south from Canaan to Bloomfield is rolling with very nice views of the White Mtns in NH. once you get south of Lemington, the pavement improves and things flatten out a bit. The steepest climbs are on the last leg, though they are not terribly long. Again, the road surface is generally bad 3'-4' from the edge, so you really need to keep your eyes open.
