| pretty farmland south of Munich / München which Sharon + I rode in September 2009. Lots of quiet roads, horses, cows, little villages. Three towns with food options, one big view of Tegern lake (optionally could ride around the Tegernsee lake). For more info and other routes, see www.roberts-1.com/b/x/de. One or two short sections on dirt/gravel, otherwise asphalt surface, mostly in sound condition. Route is the GPS points from our riding that day (with minor edits). | Riding thru farmland with cows and horses, some big views, and finishing aimed toward the most spectacular castler in Europe. Alternate to section C of "Neuschwanstein - Oberammergau loop" (search on bikely for [denpoc] -- with shorter and fewer steep sections than section C -- but less interesting + scenic and with more motor traffic noise (because much is close to road 17). For an alternate route for this section, more interesting and scenic, and less motor traffic noise (but longer distance and some steeper hills), can search on Bikely for [denpoc]. | Wonderful farmland with lakes and forests, cows and horses, delightful little villages, some big views, which finishes aimed toward the most spectacular castle in Europe -- mostly avoiding high-traffic roads. We did this as one section of a single-day loop ride of 111 km (or less) which returned to Steingaden by way of Austria and Oberammergau. Also check the labels on route points or on the Cue Sheet for warnings and alternate route possibilities. Some steep climbing sections, which we think are well rewarded by big views, fun downhills, and interesting quiet roads. But to avoid much of the steepness (but less interesting and much more motor traffic noise) we've also done an alternate route more direct: Steingaden - Halblech - Neuschwanstein: can search on Bikely for [denpoc2]. For the other two sections of the loop, search on Bikely for [denpoa], [denpob]. We've done it once so far: the track given is from our GPS. The town of Oberammergau is famous for its "passion play", and this route goes past the playhouse, but apart from that the town is pretty and pleasant to visit. Surprise is that the roads of this section go thru hilly farmland without significant steep climbs. For the other two sections of the loop, search on Bikely for [denpoc], [denpoa]. We've done it once so far: the track given is from our GPS. We thought the full loop was a great ride so we're sharing it, but it's possible there are some mistakes or problems we didn't notice. Visits two famous castles with remarkable exterior looks: Neuschwanstein and Linderhof - (recommend planning an extra 45 minutes off the bike to walk around the exterior of Linderhof). A long section beside a mountain lake and thru a forest with very little human development. Oberammergau is famous for its "passion play", and this route goes past the playhouse, but apart from that the town is pretty and pleasant to visit. All on reasonably good asphalt except for one short section on dirt (which could be avoided). Some long gentle sections, some long moderate climbs, some short steep climbs.
