Start/Finish Wyche, OS grid reference SO 768437 Total distance 20km (12.5 miles) Total ascent 980m (3200 feet) Total time 3-3.5 hours Maps Explorer 190: Malvern Hills and Bredon Hill. Or Garmin GB Discoverer 1:50K – Southern England & Wales (GPS). Summary Don’t be fooled by the relatively short distance – there’s as much climbing (and descending) here as on plenty of rides twice as long. Start from Wyche and head north along the obvious wide track through the car park. At trail crossing turn left to descend through woodland to the road. Immediately fork right and follow wide track running roughly parallel to road, keeping left at junctions. Just before rejoining road, fork right on grassy bridleway along the edge of the houses. Turn left onto gravel track, following this up hill to the major trail junction on ridge. Take the left trail running straight up the ridge to Sugarloaf Hill and down the other side, crossing over wide gravel track to major junction. Take narrower trail left, descending through woods. At the bottom, turn right on gravel track and climb to ridge north of Table Hill. Descend steeply down valley and between quarries. Turn right on road and then fork right up track. After about 800m double back right and continue climbing for 400m before switching back left to join wide track skirting to south of North Hill. At major junction turn right up and over North Hill to rejoin wide track. Turn left to loop around North and Table hills back to the trail junction. Head south along ridge and climb to Worcestershire Beacon. Continue south on ridge back to Wyche Cutting. At the road, turn left through cutting then right on to track climbing across eastern flank of Perseverance Hill to ridge. Continue on ridge over Jubilee Hill then fork right to traverse western slope. Regain ridge south of Pinnacle Hill and continue south to Wynds Point. Turn left at junction and follow benched trail through woodland swinging north to quarry before descending on zig-zag trail to road. Turn left on road for about 1km to Holy Well. Join bridleway zig-zagging back up to ridge and descend north back to Wyche Cutting.

Start/Finish Tank Quarry car park, OS grid reference SO 770470 Total distance 15.4km (9.6 miles) Total ascent 795m (2600 feet) Total time 2-2.5 hours Maps Ordnance Survey Explorer 190: Malvern Hills and Bredon Hill. Or Garmin GB Discoverer 1:50K – Southern England & Wales (GPS). Summary Subtly trimmed version of the Classic route, ideal for a quicker blast if you’re short on time or if you’re feeling the excesses of Christmas and want less mileage (and climbing). Start at Tank Quarry car park at the northern tip of the Malverns. Exit on bridleway heading southeast, quickly forking right to climb. Zig-zag up the side of North Hill to reach a wide, well-surfaced track. Turn right to follow the track anti-clockwise around North Hill and Table Hill. Keep left as the trail descends then climbs again to a major trail junction. Take the track due south over Sugarloaf Hill and descend to a junction. Carry straight on to climb Worcestershire Beacon – be sure to take the track that swings right then left, and not the one going straight up the side. From the Beacon descend via the ridge to Wyche Cutting. At the road turn left through the cutting then immediately right onto the bridleway. Continue to descend, keeping left as far as the buildings and then bearing right to emerge on the road at Holy Well. Continue along the road for 100m then turn right onto the bridleway. Climb generally southwards until a right-hand switchback delivers you onto the ridge at Black Hill. Turn right and follow the ridgeline all the way back to Wyche. Retrace your path left through the cutting and then right onto the track, but bear left initially to stay west of the ridge before crossing over to the east side between Summer Hill and Worcestershire Beacon. Follow the bridleway traversing across slopes as far as the head of the valley then head straight down the valley. At the bottom turn left and follow the track skirting the base of the hills all the way back to the start point.

Start/Finish Coombe Hill car park, OS grid reference SO 852062 Total distance 9.4km (5.8 miles) Total ascent 443m (1450 feet) Total time 1-1.5 hours Maps Ordnance Survey Explorer 190: Malvern Hills and Bredon Hill. Or Garmin GB Discoverer 1:50K – Southern England & Wales (GPS) Summary Very short but still a fair amount of climbing and descending. A decent outing for a beginner or a fast blast for the more experienced. Leave the car park and go south on the road for 100m. Head straight up the steep grassy slope to the end of the ridge and straight over the other side down the zig-zags. Follow the bench-cut trail along the eastern flank of the hills to the quarry. Carry on past the quarry on obvious track then descend the steep zig-zags to the road. Turn left and follow road for 1km to Holy Well. Join bridleway, then double back left. At next junction switch back right and keep climbing to ridge – other trails join to right and left, keep heading up hill. Once on the ridge, head north over Perseverance Hill and descend to Wyche Cutting. At the road turn right to pass through the cutting itself, and then right onto obvious wide track heading south on the eastern flank of the hills. At fork bear left and descend on the trail you climbed earlier. At next fork bear right to continue traverse – if you descend to the road you’ve missed it. Climb steadily until final zig-zags take you on to the ridge at Black Hill. Turn left and descend along the ridge to return to your start point.
