a little hilly through the cinque terre park. Quite steep into (and out of) Moneglia. The road along the coast from Moneglia is actually a tunnel and bikes are not allowed. I did not have the guts to ride through it although I have heard about others doing so using a stop watch and bursts of speed. I had the time and the ... to climb out of there. My way was much more scenic.

This ends in riomaggiore, cinque terre. There was no camping there. I enjoyed the road above the five worlds more than the five worlds. Although pretty, the towns were populated by tourists not unlike myself.

Not very safe riding on highway A2. I wish that I had stayed away from it. There may be other roads that run parallel to the highway.

great road until Thika. Then the shoulder is very iffy. I decided to turn north late in hte day. Eventually I ended up in the small village of Gutundu. Very hilly the last 10 or 15 kilometers. Give yourself enough time. Pretty good hotel there (Oasis Hotel).

Beautful ride across the rift valley and up the escarpment. All postings of the equator that I saw (may 2009) were off. The actual equator (according to my GPS) was not marked at all.

fast ride to Nakuru from Lake Naivasha. Big highway but wide shoulders in good shape. Mostly downhill.

This is a day tour of Hells Gate--one of the first parks to allow bicyles. A clock wise direction is preferable for me because the steep downhill is in bad shape--your milage may vary. A short excursion at the end to a small lake that used to be attached to the main lake. It is one of few public water front accesses to the lake.

This is a very nice ride to Lake Naivasha. Traffic is light on the old highway. Leave some time for stopping as you get to the the escarpment. There is a beautiful view of the Rift Valley.

This is a very unsafe route out of Nairobi. The shoulder is in very poor shape (May, 2009) and often missing. A mirror is essential so that you can keep an eye on traffic behind you. Rember that traffic is on the left hand in Kenya and make sure your mirror will work for this traffic.

Bike trail to Sooke, quiet highway to Port Renfrew, good logging roads to and around Cowichan Lake, narrow highway down to Duncan (possible to bypass with parallel secondary highway, then busy but wide highway to mill bay (possible to bypass on secondary roads). Finish with a ferry ride and quiet bike paths back to Victoria.

Ride designed by Mike. Mark helped me by letting me draft. I kept up for almost 60k. Then they were warmed up for the remaining 140 they had planned. I just had a leisurely ride home after they sped away.
