The day's journey can best be described as a long and gradual uphill ride with an overall gain in elevation of about 550 feet. Despite being located close to major cities, the 25 mile stretch between Brazil and Plainfield is very rural and there are almost no services (they all moved out to the Interstate!). You'll be using various alignment of Route 40 all day and you will completely avoid I-70. If you follow this itinerary, you do so at your own risk. Failure to exercise good judgment can result in traffic violation citations, injury and even death. If in doubt, please consult with state and local law enforcement agencies.

This is another easy day's ride. You will travel north of the Missouri River most of the day with very gradual ascents and descents. The pace will pick up at Wentzville and you will follow the old Route 40 Bypass alignment north of Saint Louis. (See the special routing of Day 23A if you are really interested in going through the city. I advise against the city route as the traffic is very intense and crossing the Missouri River will be a challenge. In addition, you will need to ride through East Saint Louis, a city with one of the highest crime rates in America.) Since the Missouri River Bridge at St. Charles does not allow pedestrian traffic you will need to arrange for a ride across the river. If you follow this itinerary, you do so at your own risk. Failure to exercise good judgment can result in traffic violation citations, injury and even death. If in doubt, please consult with state and local law enforcement agencies.

The journey continues across the Forty Mile Desert and some of the most inhospitable terranin on the entire route. Extreme caution is advised in this section; please carry plenty of extra water as you may have to go as much as 50 miles between watering oppotunities. Regarding terrain, this section is relatively flat - a far cry from the climb across the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Note: accommodations in Mill City are rather scarce, so advanced reservations are recommended. If you follow this itinerary, you do so at your own risk. Failure to exercise good judgment can result in traffic violation citations, injury and even death. If in doubt, please consult with state and local law enforcement agencies.

This is another easy day of riding with a 1,500 overall descent over 113 miles. With the strong winds from the west you can pretty much coast all the way! The only special consideration for this day's riding is that a significant portion of the old Route 40 alignment is unpaved gravel road. There are plenty of small towns with generous hospitality. If you follow this itinerary, you do so at your own risk. Failure to exercise good judgment can result in traffic violation citations, injury and even death. If in doubt, please consult with state and local law enforcement agencies.

There are two routings for the Day 7 biking. This is the shortest but more dangerous of the two. Rather than use back roads to avoid I-80, it uses the highway itself – not a great idea. The route consists of a gradual ascent from Elko to Pequop Summit – a climb of about 2,000 feet. After that summit, the road is a fairly rapid descent of about 3,000 feet. If you follow this itinerary, you do so at your own risk. Failure to exercise good judgment can result in traffic violation citations, injury and even death. If in doubt, please consult with state and local law enforcement agencies.

This is the last day for biking through the Rocky Mountains. You'll leave Idaho Springs and then descend almost 2,000 feet in 20 miles. This will take you into Denver. From there, you'll enter the high plains and enjoy a fairly level ride for the next 90 miles. You may want to split this day's ride into two days and do some exploring in the Denver area. If you follow this itinerary, you do so at your own risk. Failure to exercise good judgment can result in traffic violation citations, injury and even death. If in doubt, please consult with state and local law enforcement agencies.
