| This is another easy day of riding with a 1,500 overall descent over 113 miles. With the strong winds from the west you can pretty much coast all the way! The only special consideration for this day's riding is that a significant portion of the old Route 40 alignment is unpaved gravel road. There are plenty of small towns with generous hospitality. | This is a very easy day's ride as it is almost completely downhill! Over the course of 99 miles you will drop 800 feet in elevation with almost no ascents. You will also be riding on the older decommissioned alignment of Route 40. If you like grain elevators, you're going to love this day's journey. | The day's journey is mostly downhill with a gradual 250 foot ascent for the last 25 miles. This section follows the ORIGINAL alignment of Route 40 which ran north of the Kansas River. Between St. Mary and Lawrence, you'll essentially be biking along the Oregon Trail. I am not providing an alternate route along the current alignment of Route 40 (which runs south of the Kansas River) because there aren't enough side and frontage roads to make it safe to do so. | My wife and I rode this route in the Spring of 2009 as part of a cross-country tour. It deviates from the ACA TransAm route at Rush Center, KS and ends at the western entrance to the Katy Trail. The latter, which can be easily ridden with road bikes even though it is unpaved, goes across Missouri into St. Louis. This route is mostly flat and the traffic volume is generally light. | |||||

| This ride is an excellent weekend ride through the Kansas countryside. It is an easy 50mi. ride with many scenic spots and places to stop for water and food. Who wants to live in the city when you can enjoy rides through the Kansas cornfields. | |||||
