The Premier Gran Fondo in Italy? Well it is certainly well organised consisting of 55km, Medio 106km and the full Maratona 138km route of long climbs and, you can decide the route as you go according to how you feel on the day. Included are fast descents and big bunches but careful on the psychology! The simple sight of 3000m peaks can play tricks on the mind of any but the most experienced of cyclists but, the gradients are generally not steep although the climbs are very, very long. It is a truly wonderful atmosphere, the feeling of inclusion, camaraderie, of family and a sense that you are in the best place it is possible to be - on a bike in the beautiful southern Tyrol, surrounded by 'friends'.

The further south and west you are in Cheshire, the quieter and more rural the roads tend to be. All the more surprising them, that the idyllic green pastures seen on this ride also extend from a once-secret cold-war nuclear bunker to romantic castle gardens. Killer hills (for 105 & 164km rides), unpredicable weather, several 15% climbs and the Mow Cop Killer Mile at 25% (164km ride only), sets this ride apart from most as a 'real' challenge ride.

The Bedford level, north of Ely, offers a flat 31km loop - once (or still) the subject of the 'Bedford Level Experiment' to prove the Earth was flat during the mid-1800's. The Flat Earth Society carried out numerous obsevations and calculations at this time to convince others of their beliefs. Ridng in this area one can see why they chose it ! An EXPERT ride in an area through the idylls and airfields that surround the town of Gadalming (NB The first town in the world to have electric public street lighting). Not renown for easy, traffic free riding - the area is criss-crossed by major arterial roads from London and between major towns of the area. But this ride should allow you to find the home counties idyll that so inspired poet laureate John betjeman nd is epitomised in his poem 'A Subaltern's Love-song. Given good weather you too can become 'furnish'd' and burnish'd' by the same sun that rendered Miss J Hunter Dunn so beautiful. GEARS: 39x23, better a 39x25, but a compact is best to enjoy the finishing climbs; BIKE SHOP: Godalming Cycles 01483 420036; INFO: www.godalming-tc.gov.uk

Expert Ride. Dartmoor is renowned for the challenging nature of its terrain. The effort required to climb steeply to well over 300m several times on this ride is well worth it though - the roads are largely quiet and the scenery exquisite, and the towns and villages you pass through en route have a typical country charm. Unless a masochist, you should take a triple or a compact! Bike Shops: The Bike Shed, Exeter 01392 426191; Bikus, Bovey Tracey 01626 833444. www.exeter.gov.uk/visiting.

CLASSIC: Solitary lanes, panoramic views, an art deco airport and Eccles cakes on the Bluebell line.... Just plenty of Sussex countryside, several attractions to keep your mind occupied and, best of all, multiple opportunities for refreshment stops. CLASSIC ride with just one tough (but oligatory to say you have!) climb of Ditchling Beacon towards the end, so compact is fine but not essential. Rolling Sussex Weald (one climb) but a few deceptively tough drags.
