This is a tarmac alternative to the off road section from Clennell. It's the same sort of distance.

This route misses out the A697, but does involve a stiff climb on a very poorly maintained (for cycles and none 4*4's) track. In my opinion it's a valid alternative as it passes a good example of an iron age hill fort, and has a nice exhilarating downhill to Ingram, with great (Doddington's) ice cream available in the summer.

A suggested alternative to the Ingram, Roddam, Ilderton bit of NCN route 68. Some off road but nothing 'technical' (and NO FORD). You might like to try accessing http://s637.photobucket.com/albums/uu97/sadoldsamurai/Brandon%20to%20Ilderton%20braid/ for some photos of what to expect. Happy mudplugging! And thanks again to Derek Purdy of 'The Northumberland Mountain bike guide' fame.
