Rat Race Road Trip Stage 4 thunderthighs Mar 1st, 08:12 172.9km
Stage 4 of Rat Race Road trip. [as of 01/03/2013] From Morpeth it’s a break for the Border and then, one fairly long hill climb later, Sláinte, you’re in Scotland. It’s 50 miles to Edinburgh from here. The Scottish Borders harbours some classic cycling country and the roads are a real joy. The Tour of Britain has had stage starts here in recent years and the mountain biking meccas of the 7 Stanes Forests both allude to the love of biking in these parts. After some lovely stretches, you approach Auld Reekie – the Scottish Capital. From afar you will catch a glimpse of Arthur’s Seat, the giant extinct volcano protruding out of Edinburgh into the sky. And then you’re there. Some urban riding, one or two traffic lights and probably a few cobbles and you’ve arrived. Welcome to Edinburgh – the end of the Road Trip.
Rat Race Road Trip Stage 3 thunderthighs Mar 1st, 08:12 182.2km
Stage 3 of Rat Race Road trip. [as of 01/03/2013] From York, you will ride through the City Walls and into Old York, before departing to the North via the Vale of York, providing beautifully quiet and rural farm landscapes, with fast flat roads weaving throughout. As York Minster disappears from view on the horizon behind you, the Howardian Hills provide a bit of undulation which will warm the legs up for the distinctly less-than-flat miles up ahead. Although not mountainous, the undulating terrain of the Wear and Tyne valleys provide some testing riding. You approach the end of Stage 3 at Morpeth, just north of Newcastle. This is not the biggest mileage day but probably the toughest due to steep ascents so consider getting to the end of stage 3 a real milestone to completion of your Road Trip; you’re more than ¾ of the way to Edinburgh, you’ve done a fair few of the the ups-and-downs and you have nearly made the Scottish Border.
Rat Race Road Trip Stage 2 thunderthighs Mar 1st, 08:11 193.7km
Stage 2 of Rat Race Road trip. [as of 01/03/2013] A fast and fairly flat day’s riding will bring you through Lincolnshire, parts of Nottinghamshire and into South Yorkshire. Passing the vast power stations on the banks of the River Trent, you cross the River Humber and enter North Yorkshire, loosely following the River Ouse into the ancient city of York. The home of the Rat Race is your home for the evening and represents the exact mid-point of the Challenge for all riders. whether you are an Expert or a Challenger, you will be getting your head down here for a few hours before continuing north-wards. You’re 200 miles from London and 200 miles from Edinburgh at this point.
Rat Race Road Trip Stage 1 thunderthighs Mar 1st, 08:11 157.8km
Stage 1 of Rat Race Road Trip. [as of 01/03/2013] The route begins with a stunning departure from Tower Bridge. You will follow a Cycle Super Highway and quiet roads through the early morning towards Canary Wharf, before swinging north-east towards the green and pleasant Lea Valley via the Olympic Park. You will start your journey by crossing this iconic structure then cycle straight out of London via the shortest route, crossing the M25. As soon as your free from London the route the route rolls through Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire through quiet countryside, before the Stage ends at the majestic Burghley Park Estate, just inside Lincolnshire. Capability’s Brown’s landscaped grounds provide an amazing overnight camp-site for those doing the Challenger, within view of Elizabethan Burghley House itself.
