Now it's down to the nitty-gritty with rolling valleys and a mild homage to the “Ardennes Classics” following, as it does, part of the routes for the Fleche Wallonne and Liege-Bastogne-Liege. No big slopes here... yet, but it’s a rugged route on which all sorts of things could happen.

This could be interesting - cobbles! There will be four big sections over the last thirty kilometres, so expect the strong to survive, climbers to slip and fun (even mahem) to ensue. Fear will touch the leaders hearts as they try not to lose Le Tour before it even starts.

Nothing enormous yet but the hills are a comin'. Climbs are starting to get longer and steeper so its time to brush off the cobwebs. Here we should get a better feel for who will be heading Le Tour and most hands should be exposed and game plans emerging. A real roller coaster - hopefully in more ways than one!

A days rest now its into the main Alpine stage, with the Col de la Colombiere (1, 1618m) pass via Le Reposoir, the Col des Aravis (2, 1487m), Col des Saisies (1, 1660m) and the Col de la Madeleine (HC, 2000m) but no summit finish, rather a long downhill and flat into Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne. A favourite in a strong team, or the chance for a break away to succeed? or, will a contender take a chance and surprise us all?

More hills, but with added difficulty. The Cote de Laffrey (1, 886m) climb, on leaving Vizille, is very difficult. The Col du Noyer (2, 1664m) is very complicated. And the descent is winding and has had its fair share of incident in the past.

Another long stage, in a region that is often hot, includes Suc de Montivemoux (2, 1315m) and the day ends with the Laurent Jalabert (Cote de la Croix Neuve 2, 1047m) climb in Mende. Here a rapid transition to climbing is needed so punchy riders could steal a march on less able rivals who may not faulter but could easily show cracks.

This is a stage that will enable non mountain climbers to breathe easier, rest but if needed, could be of interest in the green jersey battle. There is not much left after this other than than some big mountain stages before the run in at the end through Bordeaux, Paris, and the Champs-Elysees. Not a kind year for sprinters.

Now into the second week of the race it starts to get BIG and tiredness will be creeping in. Tackle the Pyrenees the riders will really start to feel it in their legsand the finish on this one is the hard part. The route is flat until the Port de Pailheres (HC, 2001m), a little more than 30 kilometres from the finish. The climb to Ax 3 Domaines (1, 1360m) follows on immediately, which could open up gaps. A key day for the Yellow Jersey and weaknesses to be exploited?

| Some testing climbs (2, Col de Portet-d'Aspet, 1069m; 2, Col des Ares, 797m) and a long, fast, technical descent of Port des Bales (HC, 1755m) where positions can and probably will change.
The Port de Bales has only been climbed once, in 2007, before which there was no tarmac - laid as it was especially for le Tour. The pass is a fantastic sight, hard, not very wide and, once the riders reach the top, a good downhill rider can open up the gaps, because it really is a very tough descent. Many may 'fall' and see dreams end here. |

It is the same route (except that the stage finish was in Mourenx) as in 1969 when Eddy Merckx was victorious after a 180-kilometre breakaway. |

After the second rest day in Pau, the riders will set out for their final mountain battle. Following the Col de Marie-Blanque (1, 1035m) climb, we will head back down into the valley. After only three kilometres of flat, we will immediately get to grips with the Col du Soulor (1, 1474m), a long, long, long climb, almost 25-kilometres long! The Aubisque pass is just next to it, then the riders will head down before tackling the Col du Tourmalet (HC, 2115m). At the highest point of this Tour, the Henri-Desgrange memorial trophy will be awarded.

With the struggle for the final GC places probably all but over the focus should briefly fall to the sprinters. This stage is often capital to the team classification, so all the teams will be taking it seriously. People sometimes wonder why a team sets out to catch a breakaway. They often do it because there are riders from other teams in the leading group. If two riders from one team are ten minutes ahead of the pack, then this adds up to twenty minutes in the general team classification. Chasing the scraps of le Tour help keep this classic going and going...

This is the only 'real' time-trial stage. The route will wind its way through the streets of Bordeaux for fifteen kilometres, with avenues and buildings to shelter the riders. Then suddenly, they will leave the city and arrive in the open countryside, amidst the vineyards, because they will be passing through the famous landmarks of the Haut Medoc wine-making region, such as Margaux, passing one chateau after another. The finish is magnificent. On the face of it, this time trial will merely fine-tune the classifications; there is no way the seventeenth-placed rider will grab first place. The last time trial when the Yellow Jersey changed hands on the penultimate day was in 2006, when Landis (3rd at the time behind Sastre) triumphed. However did he do that?

The last stage of Le Tour, with its prestigious finish on the Champs-Elysees, will also be the year’s shortest at 102.5 kilometres - indeed you have to go back to 1989, to the stage between Bourg d’Oisans and Villard-de-Lans, to find a shorter one. It was only 91.5 kilometres long and was won by Laurent Fignon. He thought that the fifty seconds lead he held over Greg LeMond would be sufficient for victory in Paris, but in the end, he lost by eight!
