It's a great climb up to la Berarde (all 17-miles of the D530), even better is the way back, one hardly has to pedal to move forward - it's almost entirely downhill. Of course, that means that on the way out....

[CYCLING CLASSIC] The 'Alpine Classic 2010' is a very challenging adventure in three parts through the beautiful French Alps including the opening climb of the classic cyclo sportive race La Marmotte and two legendary Tour de France mountains. This is one of those two, the 37km climbs of Col du Glandon and the Col de la Croix-de-Fer. The second is the Col de la Colombière - but that is another route!

[MOUNTAIN STAGE] Alpine Classic Marmotte 2004 (FR). This ride starts with a short descent (a 3rd of the way) along the Col du Télégraphe (decent towards the Galibier) to the Valloir ski resort. After passing through the centre of the town, which (in the TACX video) is busy with construction activities, you begin the long ascent of the Col du Galibier. At a certain point you will be riding above the tree line, with alternating, fascinating views across the Alps. You then reach the infamous U-turn at Plan Lachat. From there, things get more difficult. The combination of altitude and steep slope conspire to slow you down. Towards the top of the Galibier the road slashes through a spectacular wall of snow (at least on video!), which is metres high at some places. After the 300-metre tunnel, you start a fantastic descent that leads you to the Col du Lautaret (2,000m). You ride alongside a glacier at La Meije Pass (3,983m), the village of La Grave, through tunnels and over the dam bridge at Lac du Chambon. You finish at the foot of the Lautaret at Les Clapier. Next comes a nearly dead straight false flat in the direction of the village of Bourg-d Oisans. Right before the village you turn right and, after 50 metres, arrive at the official starting line where the climb to l'Alpe d'Huez begins. This climb has long, difficult sections with 10% gradients and numerous hairpin curves. The finish is in the village of l'Alpe d'Huez, near the tunnel entrance. * Col du Galibier (2,500m) * l'Alpe d'Huez (1,839m)

The Tour is providing a little respite here with one easy climb up Col de Cabre (3, 1180m). Time for the green jersey battle to resurface.

Another long stage, in a region that is often hot, includes Suc de Montivemoux (2, 1315m) and the day ends with the Laurent Jalabert (Cote de la Croix Neuve 2, 1047m) climb in Mende. Here a rapid transition to climbing is needed so punchy riders could steal a march on less able rivals who may not faulter but could easily show cracks.
