On the southside of Melrose immediately east of Normandie is some of the most harrowing and seemingly never-resolved and ever-worsening potholes in the city. Occasionally the city's Bureau of Street Services will fill in the holes with asphalt but the result is uneven and extremely dangerous. It's time for BOSS to quit applying a short-term bandage to this wound and elect to perform surgery that will make this corner safer to traverse.

On the southside of Beverly Boulevard east of Highland Avenue is a segment of uneven roadway near the curb that poses as danger to cyclists.

Traversing the southside of Beverly Boulevard between Wilton Place and Western Avenue by bike is something I would never recommend. The amount of curbside deterioration of the roadway coupled with the short-term patching that the Bureau of Street Services provides qualifies this stretch of roadway as some of the most dangerous in the city.
LA BMP - Trouble Spot: Jefferson @ La Cienega wildbell Feb 7th 2008, 06:47 0.6km
  • Commute
  • Onroad
  • Difficult
  • High traffic

Westbound on Jefferson across La Cienega is a notoriously bike-unfriendly in large part to the narrowing of the northside traffic lanes and defunct rail tracks that must be traversed. This may very well be resolved if a bikeway is included in the Expo Line plans, but until then, something needs to be done to give cyclists greater safety.

On both east and west sides of Silver Lake Boulevard alongside the reservoir there are varying degrees of roadway cracking that cyclists must negotiate around and over. It's a shame that with the implementation of the pedestrian pathway there are no plans to repair the extensive level of damage and thus make these important and well-used Class I lanes safer and more enjoyable.

Home of the Bicycle Kitchen, Orange 20 Bike Shop, Pure Luck restaurant, and Scoops Ice Cream, Heliotrope and Melrose has emerged as the unofficial center of the city's burgeoning bike culture and should be officially recognized as such. This is my usual route there or back.

La Cienega Boulevard is notorious for its bike unfriendliness and Crescent Heights provides a great and much safer alternative getting you north and south. The staggered section can get a cyclist to Venice Boulevard by bypassing La Cienega under the 10 Freeway.

I am becoming increasingly disillusioned that these master plan update workshop meetings are just going to run everyone around in circles accomplishing little. Yay Los Angeles!
LA BMP - The Abandoned Class III Connector Joining the Chandler Bikeway to the Riverside Bike Lane and the L.A. River Bikeway! wildbell Feb 21st 2008, 05:26 5.2km
Thanks to a bunch of NIMBYs (who equate the presence of cyclists with increased crime and traffic) and their councilmembers, the city of Burbank in October 2006 voted to abandon approved plans for a Class III bike route to join the Chandler Bikeway with the Riverside Class I bike lane and ultimately the Los Angeles River Bikeway. Though the council directed the city's planning department to explore alternatives to this date 16 months later the whole thing remains shelved because of fear of the same outcry from NIMBYs on other residential streets. And here I thought Burbank was a bike-friendly place.

If there was a single street in the city that the masterplan should devote some serious attention to it is the crosstown length of 4th Street from Hoover to Cochran. Of all the east/west streets it is the most ready-made to be converted into a bike boulevard the likes of which can be found in Berkeley, Calif.

Even with its shortcomings and pockets of poorly maintained roadway, Washington Boulevard is a nice corridor with less evening vehicular traffic to compete against, making this one of the regular ways I get home after work.

Roughly a 17-mile route that traverses Fountain Avenue westward to La Cienega then Santa Monica Boulevard to Beverly Hills where you'll note that Santa Monica Boulevard is then righteously avoided by arcing over Carmelita back to where Santa Monica Boulevard becomes more bike friendly and safer across the new transit corridor and all the way out to Ocean Avenue.
