This is a long hard but rewarding ride with beautiful scenery. Between Dargo and the Mount Hotham Road there is little water available apart from a welcome torrent at Mount Ewen Springs, about 25km from Dargo. Apart from that, you can get water from the bog pools on the high plain. We drank that with no ill effect. Good views from the high plains across to Mount Hotham and a great run down to Harrietville to finish off a long day. Adelaide Hills - Saunders Gorge & Marne River quandongpie Nov 20th 2009, 08:35 164.3km
Did this ride over 2 days with an overnight stop in Mannum. Route starts off through farmland heading towards the eastern escarpment of the Mount Lofty Ranges. As you get closer to Saunders Gorge there are impressive views across the hills, dry stone walls, even creeks with running water (winter 2009). If you want to ride down the gorge you should request permission from the landowners - see www.saundersgorge.com.au. A track follows the river which has not flowed now for several years. You will eventually emerge at the entrance to Saunders Gorge Sanctuary on the plain that extends across to the Murray River. The route skirts the hills until you reach the Marne River which also cuts an impressive gorge as it flows out on to the plain. The road follows the river to the Murray but we turned off towards Mannum at Black Hill. Good quality low traffic dirt roads lined with mallee take you to Pellaring Flat. The rest of the route is on sealed road.

Good short on-road training ride with some climbing, quiet roads and views. This route takes you along the Gorge Road, a scenic winding road along the Torrens river valley. There is a steepish climb up to the Kangaroo Creek dam. Continue along the road for several kilometres until you reach the turn off to Torrens Hill Road. This starts off with a steep pinch and continues fairly relentlessly up to Paracombe Road. This is an orchard growing area with good views across to the south. Past the golf course you will join Lower North East Road for a long downhill run back to the suburbs.

Eudunda is 100km north of Adelaide. It is a grain growing area on the edge of the ranges looking out on to the plains that extend to the Murray River. This route is undemanding and pleasant, through beautiful farmland and with great views. Julia Road runs along a ridge to the north with a nice downhill run down Cutting Road into Point Pass. You can see the golden steeple of Point Pass Lutheran Church as you descend and you will pass this church as you ride back towards Eudunda. The southern loop of this route also takes you along a ridge giving spectacular views. Look out for the old stone cairn a few km out of Eudunda on Tablelands Road. Leake Pass Road takes you along a descent with some good vegetation and gullies running out to the plains. There are a number of stone ruins along the way. This ride is recommended in spring when the wheat fields are ripening. Eudunda has a good pub and community club where you can get dinner.
