| Boca Raton Sunday Jaunt | bobby_fishtrunks | Sep 18th 2009, 02:10 | 24.4km | ||
| Starts and ends with a warm-up and cool down through FAU... root traces FAU trail on the eastern most border of FAU that is paved but unmapped. See satellite view. This is the warm-up and cool-down zone. The rest of the route features a few small 'hills' that are the bridges over Spanish River and the Boca Raton Inlet. | |||||
| The Half-Monty Miami | bobby_fishtrunks | Sep 14th 2009, 02:47 | 29.3km | ||
| An often-traced route, but one that I regularly ride and wanted to get more exact numbers on... | |||||
| Old People Smell: West Boca Trek | bobby_fishtrunks | Oct 11th 2009, 01:15 | 43.6km | ||
| Glades West takes you via the I-95 overpass for a hill/traffic start, no bike lanes virtually all the way west passed 441 and into Mission Bay. I didn't realize beforehand but there is a really nice circuit back there with a lot of guys out on Saturday morns...reminds me of Kendall Lakes in Miami a bit. I cut south in an attempt to get through to Hillsboro but ended up running to the end of Palmetto, which turns back into Glades and heads north. I just went with it, got back to 441, and decided to come back on Yamato. There is the Yamato overpass at the Florida Turnpike. I cut south on Military in order to hit the Spanish River I-95 overpass as a last hill. All-in-all an okay ride, but I probably won't do it again. | |||||
| Woolbright Circuit | bobby_fishtrunks | Oct 3rd 2009, 11:09 | 46.7km | ||
| This route has a mixture of bike-lane riding and with-traffic segments. The terrain also varies-- for the first leg all the way to Woolbright, you'll pass an asphalt works and a cement company, so you can imagine the roads in that area... on the way back, you get to push-on with all of the 'cycling elite' on the smooth and harmless A1A South. There are hills: Spanish River Bridge, Woolbright Overpass, Woolbright Intracoastal, and Spanish River Intracoastal. I've taken this ride a few times now and I like it. | |||||
| Loxahatchee Loop | bobby_fishtrunks | Oct 24th 2009, 05:51 | 54km | ||
| This is my first attempt to put together a good loop to Loxahatchee Wildlife Preserve from East Boca Raton. It starts with some pretty straight-forward suburban riding south to SW 18th Street. SW 18th is a pretty tight one-to-two lane rip almost all the way to 441. Both I-95 and the Tpk are overpass hills on this route. Once you get to 441 you only deal with the 441 madness for a mile or so south before linking up with Hillsboro West. It consists of a wide, flat, straight double-lane road (two both ways) with a large median to divide traffic. There are Spanish Oaks lining the road providing some scenery. Once you get to Lox Road the trek turns into a two-lane country road (one lane each way) with little-to-no curbside. There isn't a ton of traffic (dead-end), but what does pass on the slim lanes is usually 10-tons with something in tow. There is a horse ranch (or two?) which is sort've cool. Road ends at at the preserve. I took Hillsboro East back, pretty wide bike lanes virtually the whole way. Hillsboro has a bridge over the turnpike, but ducks under 95. I will take this trek a few more times but will likely tweak it each time to see something new. | |||||
| The Oh Face: B-Ratty to Oleta Straight Shot | bobby_fishtrunks | Jan 23rd 2010, 05:39 | 59km | ||
| A trip from Boca to Oleta River State Park. This trek calls for an FAU departure, the state park is the finish... The leg by FTL airport is a high-speed corridor, some caution required there... At Oleta, cyclists can take the E Bus (every hour on the :30s on Saturdays) from Biscayne and 163rd to the Golden Glades Park and Ride, which gets you back to Boca or Deerfield via Tri-Rail... Don't forget, the bus max's at 2 bikes on the rack so if you go with more than 2 people... coin flipage... around 40 miles of pedaling in total. | |||||
| Hold Your Water: A Trip to Loxahatchee Water Preserve | bobby_fishtrunks | Dec 23rd 2010, 08:16 | 60.3km | ||
| Okay so this is a pretty successful route with about 80% bike lane available. Departing FAU, there is an initial hill at the Glades overpass. Jog Road has an average shoulder the whole way to Atlantic Ave. Heading west on Atlantic I have to say thats a bit tight as in absolutely no shoulder and you are riding on a two-lane road with trucks and fast traffic, this occurs after the turnpike (underpass). 441 has a bike lane. The Loxahatchee Preserve on 120th says its $1 for pedestrians but I didn't stop/pay...maybe because it was early a.m.? Boynton Beach Blvd has a really cool rough asphalt section that is almost like cobbles about a mile or two before it intersects with Jog road. There is no overpass hill on Boynton. Fun and somewhat easy if there is no wind. | |||||
| We're Not Worthy: B-Ratty to Lake Worth Loop | bobby_fishtrunks | Jan 24th 2010, 05:21 | 64.6km | ||
| A not-so-boring loop from Boca to Lake Worth that is not on A1A the whole time (but most of it). See my Woolbright post for details since this is essentially extending on that trek. Also, you'll note that I have you going "through" the tri-rail station, which means a dismount and hike up and over the train tracks on the stairs (there is an elevator too but cmon man, hehe). You can bypass all of that by taking the trail past the trirail to Yamato and then swinging west on Yamato to connect with Congress... mind the I-95 ramps if you do this though! This route is a mix of bike lane riding and in-lane riding on some parts of A1A where there is no bike lane. Congress has a paved shoulder most of the way. | |||||
| Tombstonin' Lake Worth Loop | bobby_fishtrunks | Dec 20th 2010, 12:43 | 74.6km | ||
| Another Boca Raton-Lake Worth Loop. I wanted to feel my way through the Delray area on the return and have to say I sort've boned it...the whole trek is pretty fun to Lake Worth, but the return trip winds were pounding. I tried to travel west on Atlantic and found myself on SW 8th passing the Pine Ridge Cemetery (boogiddy-boogiddy) hehehe. Anyway, that part of the route should be ignored, there is NO shoulder on SW 8th Ave. Further on, S. Dixie Hwy between Delray and Boca is a two lane route with no shoulder as well. People like to speed on that road and they use it to avoid cops on US1. Doesn't really bother me, but if you don't like "old school" in-lane cycling you may want to avoid that stretch. | |||||
| "Pedal" No'th Brah: Boca to Reef Road | bobby_fishtrunks | Jan 10th 2011, 01:54 | 97.8km | ||
| This is an A1A 60 miler... a reason to go to Reef Road when the surf is flat... (and preferably when there is no wind!) As far as scenic, flat road routes go, this is probably one of the most beautiful treks you can ride in South Florida. There are bike lanes perhaps 50 percent of the way, and you will be amazed by some of the coastal vistas. The whole route is pretty bike-friendly meaning you are surrounded by cyclists the whole way. Getting up to West Palm Beach is pretty cool, you'll ride by some serious landed estates including the historic Breakers Hotel... Reef Road is a small landmark, well, its really only a street sign, but it is one of the best surf breaks in all of Florida. | |||||
| FAU to Clewiston: Hybrid 'Cross/Road Trek | bobby_fishtrunks | Jan 24th 2011, 12:56 | 115.2km | ||
| This is a plan for a 2 -day trek (there-back), or a one-way straight shot from FAU to Clewiston. It includes a 12-mile leg on packed dirt through the Loxahatchee Water Preserve. I'm planning this one out now and will update this decription after I've made the run... | |||||
