This is a short, 15 min. commute from the North Hills area to my office at the duck pond in Fountain City. It's also a good path for avoiding all the traffic, noise, and exhaust on Broadway. It's a fairly pleasant ride this way.

This is a commute I've taken from my office in Fountain City to home in the North Hills area that takes you right across the Saddle of Sharp's Ridge. It's not on any maps because you have to hike a little and toss the bike over a short fence. But it's fun and different.

Nice ride... Just watch for the head wind. It is bound to catch you going one way or the other... It it's hard to ride against. It's a 12 mi. round drip bike trip. Also, most of the route does not have any roadside to ride on, so you just have to take up road space.

This is my long commute to work around the far end of Sharp's Ridge. It takes me from the North Hills area, across Broadway to the far end of Sharp's Ridge, overlooking Sharps Pass, then back down into more neighborhoods north of 640. I also avoid Inskip (too much traffic on a narrow road with many blind spots) by jogging over to Coster immediately after crossing 640. There are many routs from there to Fountain City part, but this is one of them. I change it up a lot though.

This is a fairly strenuous ride with lots of hills, especially on the 5 mile stretch between Loves Creek and Black Oak Ridge. That said it's also a beautiful ride through the country with farms and mountains in the distance. For this map, I went ahead and included my home commute so it may be useful as a complete riding loop for someone else.

This combines my long east and west commutes to make a nice riding loop. It's mostly low-traffic neighborhoods, some country farm areas on the east side of town. Basically it starts by the Fountain City duck pond, goes out to Love's Creek, up onto Buffat Mill for a stretch, through some old neighborhoods, around the far end of Sharps Ridge (Sharps Pass) on the west, then back through some neighborhoods to the duck pond again. The elevation changes are mild to moderate.

This is a 50 mi. ride through mostly country, past farms, streams, cows, and some great views. There are at least three public restroom stops along the way at ~14 miles (House Mountain State Park trailhead, but no running water there), 28 miles (Bates Market & Deli, restrooms, food & drink), and 32 miles (Corryton Park).
House Mountain Short Loop bmiller Sep 23rd 2008, 08:35 41.8km
Short House Mountain Loop that starts at the Shell station on Babelay & Washington Pike. There is a gravel parking lot adjacent to the station they let cyclist use for parking. Ride goes through beautiful country roads with very little traffic. Passes right by the House Mountain State Park trailhead, a nice rest stop (no running water though)

Escape Hatch for Clinch Mountain ride bmiller Sep 29th 2008, 04:52 18.5km
This is an optional detour for those who decide to bail on the climb over Clinch Moutain. With two simple turns (L onto Hwy 131 and L onto Hwy 61) it will lead you right to the second planned store stop in Blaine where they can hook back up with the rest of the pack for the return trip.

Beautiful country roads and great vistas. Goes through 3 counties (Knox, Union, & Grainger) with 3-part, rolling climb (net 900 ft. ascent) over Clinch Mountain at Power Springs Gap / Joppa Mountain Road. 68 mi. route includes two store stops at 22 and 45 mile marks.

On 10/4/08, 8 riders did this loop. We overshot two planned turns in the process (missing street signs out here). The first being S. Ridgeview North of Lutrell. We stayed n 61 instead. The second being Zachary Ridge... We took Mackey instead... Which turned out to be a very nice road! Great ride all around

This is a nice commute that by-passes Broadway and goes through Sharps Pass (sqeezed between Sharps Ridge & I-275), straight down Central (not a bad ride actually... much nicer than Broadway) to downtown.

33 miles is paved, but 2 miles is packed gravel / dirt... I did it w 700/23 tires, but wish I had cyclecross tires. The route will take you up to the temple and palace and New Vrindaban - see http://newvrindaban.com/ - a Hindu temple build by the followers of Krishna back in the 70s I believe. It was packed with tourist, mostly Indian, when I passed through. There were as many as 2,000 people living there communally at its peak in the 70s/80s. Anyway, it makes for a nice ride with a store stop at 17 miles, then back.

This is a tough 600 ft climb and back... The grades are in the 8-10% range, and it starts almost immediately (I prefer 10 miles or so of warm-up on rollers). It's a great work out though on a very short 5 mile loop.

This is a basic out and back route. I intentionally avoid back roads on cold and icy days due to risk of back ice (I rode it on New Year's Day with temps in the mid-20s). The main roads are better maintained. Close to Wheeling, there is traffic, but it drops off to a trickle after Triadelphia. The hills are minimal with a gradual 600 ft climb to the state line, then a gradual descent on the return trip.

This route takes you out around the base of House Mountain, then up onto Black Oak Ridge and back. It goes through mostly country, past farms and creeks, and a huge rail old rail yard. There are two stops at 16 miles (restrooms) and 24 miles (store).

This commute avoids the worst parts of crossing I-640, by using Tazwell, Old Broadway, and a little side road that by-passes the traffic bottleneck (as Old Broadway goes under the RR). The short bypass pops you out onto Broadway where you can cross over to the shopping center, cut through a breezeway and across the bridge behind the shopping center. See details.

There are a few pockets of traffic, but they are short. This ride is overwhelmingly country and low-traffic roads with a few hills to keep you on your toes.

This is my standard commute, to and from work in summer, to work in winter (greenway is too dark for riding at night on way home). Is about 90% greenway, except one small stretch of road that avoids the zig-zaggy greenway in Watertown.
