This is a stage that will enable non mountain climbers to breathe easier, rest but if needed, could be of interest in the green jersey battle. There is not much left after this other than than some big mountain stages before the run in at the end through Bordeaux, Paris, and the Champs-Elysees. Not a kind year for sprinters.

Today the riders will have to tackle Col de Peyresourde (1, 1569m) from the start, Col d'Aspin (1, 1490m), Col du Tourmalet (HC, 2115m) and Col d'Aubisque (HC, 1709m), with the Aubisque pass some 60 kilometres from the finishing line, although the first 30 kilometres is descent before getting to grips with the valley bottom. It is the same route (except that the stage finish was in Mourenx) as in 1969 when Eddy Merckx was victorious after a 180-kilometre breakaway.

Some testing climbs (2, Col de Portet-d'Aspet, 1069m; 2, Col des Ares, 797m) and a long, fast, technical descent of Port des Bales (HC, 1755m) where positions can and probably will change. The Port de Bales has only been climbed once, in 2007, before which there was no tarmac - laid as it was especially for le Tour. The pass is a fantastic sight, hard, not very wide and, once the riders reach the top, a good downhill rider can open up the gaps, because it really is a very tough descent. Many may 'fall' and see dreams end here.

Now into the second week of the race it starts to get BIG and tiredness will be creeping in. Tackle the Pyrenees the riders will really start to feel it in their legsand the finish on this one is the hard part. The route is flat until the Port de Pailheres (HC, 2001m), a little more than 30 kilometres from the finish. The climb to Ax 3 Domaines (1, 1360m) follows on immediately, which could open up gaps. A key day for the Yellow Jersey and weaknesses to be exploited?
