11.4km (7 miles), 179m (590ft) of climbing, 1-1.5 hours ride time. This is a short loop on mostly easygoing - but occassionally rocky - trails, with not too much climbing. It's pretty much immune to the vagaries of weather, but you may not want to hang around too long on the exposed ridge if it's nippy. Start/finish: Triscombe Stone car park (grid ref 163 359).

13km (8 miles), 533m (1749ft) of climbing, 1.5-2.5 hours riding time. The first half of this route involves a climb, first on a quiet backlane and then a forest track. After a fast descent, some woodland trails and a brief push through a technical passage, it's a great descent back into Dunster. Start/Finish: Dunster Yarn Market (grid ref: 991 438)

17.9km (11 miles), 528m (1700ft) of climbing, 1.5-2 hours ride time. This route focuses more on the southern parts of the Quantocks, with a bit more tree cover, so it's less exposed on windy days. Start/finish: Car park at bottom of Holford Combe (grid ref 155 411).

1 Start at car park in Holford, riding up through village past hotel into Holford Combe. Follow any of the trails criss-crossing bottom of the combe. When combe splits, stay right and climb obvious track out of woods and onto top of moor. Turn right onto wide ridge track and continue straight on, ignoring any turns. 2After about 1km, turn right onto initially indistinct singletrack, which leads into Somerton Combe. Descend to obvious junction with other trail, then turn left and double back up Slaughterhouse Combe, but bearing right to take trail up Lady’s Edge. 3 At the top of the climb, ride past Bicknoller Post and continue straight on, descending past stunted trees on initially indistinct grassy trail into top of Weacombe Combe. Descend to junction with bridleway at bottom of woodland and turn right, skirting lower edge of woods before dropping onto road. Turn right on road and then right again after 500m, climbing on road and then track to car park. 4 Continue straight on up main track then turn left after around 1km as gradient levels off. Climb briefly then descend, looking out for Smith’s Combe marker post after about 600m on right. Turn right here and descend into combe, ending at signpost by stream crossing. 5 Climb out of combe on obvious very steep singletrack climb to right, then follow bridleway along moorland edge until it descends into woodland, crosses stream and climbs steeply again. Take right turn here, continuing to climb back up onto moor. After 800m turn left, then right at crossroads to climb briefly to a viewpoint overlooking the Severn. Trail veers right, dropping into Hodder’s Combe. Once in combe heads left and follow the obvious track back to car park.

26km (16 miles), 813m (2670 feet) of climbing, 2-4hrs ride time. The Quantock's free-draining nature makes this an all-weather ride. Some stretches in the combes may get a bit sticky and the river crossings can get fairly deep in the wet, but that's about it. Start/finish: Car park at bottom of Holford Combe (grid ref 155 411)
