| Start/Finish Shaftesbury, ST869233
Total distance 13km (8 miles)
Total ascent 268m (880 feet)
Total time 1-1.5 hours hours
Maps OS Landranger (1:50 000) 183 Yeovil & Frome, OS Landranger 184 Salisbury & The Plain, OS Explorer (1:25 000) 118 Shaftesbury & Cranborne Chase. Or Garmin GB Discoverer 1:50K Southern England & Wales (GPS)
Summary A short woodland blast on the outskirts of Shaftesbury with a couple of technical treats in store.
1 Start either from the small car park at the edge of the trading estate or on Wincombe Lane itself. Head north east along Wincombe Lane following bridleway signs. At the junction at the corner of the woods turn right to follow the wide track along the edge of the woods. Keep an eye out for bombholes on the left for a play...
2 After 1.1km you’ll reach a junction. Turn sharp left, almost doubling back on yourself, to descend the singletrack in the gully – it’s boggy in
the wet with possible fallen trees, so take care. At the bottom climb back out of woods and through farm to a lane – yes, the bridleway goes through the garden.
3 At the lane turn left and climb on Tarmac. After 500m look out for gate to bridleway on the right through woods. If you reach another road you’ve missed it. Follow the little-used track to join road at junction. Go straight over to follow road opposite and descend for 400m.
4 Look out for a bridleway forking right up the bank – it’s easy to miss. Climb, then follow singletrack along the ridge. A steep, twisty, descent brings you back to the road.
5 Turn right and follow road for approx 3km, taking the third turn on the right (if you reach the A30 you’ve gone too far). Climb on lane then track. At the top turn left then straight on at junction of four trails. Follow track back to start point. |

Total ascent 483m (1584 feet)
Total time 1-2 hours
Maps OS Landranger 184 Salisbury & The Plain, OS Explorer (1:25 000) 118 Shaftesbury & Cranborne Chase. Or Garmin GB Discoverer 1:50K Southern England & Wales (GPS)
Summary Technically straightforward but with a couple of long climbs.
1 From car park on Win Green Hill, head NE over the cattle grid and follow wide track along the top of the scarp face. After 1.8km you meet a road coming in from the left.
2 Carry straight on along the road, ignoring the track swinging slightly right. Follow the road for 2.5km, swinging right after 1.6km. Turn left on to track and follow downhill. After 800m take the right fork to join bridleway.
3 Descend for 3.1km before turning left onto track – if you reach a junction with the road, you’ve missed it. At next junction turn left onto road. Follow for 1.4km then fork left onto track.
4 Climb for 2.8km to regain ridge. Turn left and follow main track for 2.6km to road. Carry on along road for 1.6km until road swings right and descends.
5 Stay on ridge and join track straight ahead (this is where you joined the road on the way out). Follow main track back to your start point. Turn right, uphill and keep ahead on singletrack as the wider track turns left. Continue on this singletrack, with a couple of steep and technical challenges, back to the car park. |
