Total distance 19km (11.8 miles) Total ascent 483m (1584 feet) Total time 1-2 hours Maps OS Landranger 184 Salisbury & The Plain, OS Explorer (1:25 000) 118 Shaftesbury & Cranborne Chase. Or Garmin GB Discoverer 1:50K Southern England & Wales (GPS) Summary Technically straightforward but with a couple of long climbs. 1 From car park on Win Green Hill, head NE over the cattle grid and follow wide track along the top of the scarp face. After 1.8km you meet a road coming in from the left. 2 Carry straight on along the road, ignoring the track swinging slightly right. Follow the road for 2.5km, swinging right after 1.6km. Turn left on to track and follow downhill. After 800m take the right fork to join bridleway. 3 Descend for 3.1km before turning left onto track – if you reach a junction with the road, you’ve missed it. At next junction turn left onto road. Follow for 1.4km then fork left onto track. 4 Climb for 2.8km to regain ridge. Turn left and follow main track for 2.6km to road. Carry on along road for 1.6km until road swings right and descends. 5 Stay on ridge and join track straight ahead (this is where you joined the road on the way out). Follow main track back to your start point. Turn right, uphill and keep ahead on singletrack as the wider track turns left. Continue on this singletrack, with a couple of steep and technical challenges, back to the car park.

Start/Finish Shaftesbury, ST869233 Total distance 13km (8 miles) Total ascent 268m (880 feet) Total time 1-1.5 hours hours Maps OS Landranger (1:50 000) 183 Yeovil & Frome, OS Landranger 184 Salisbury & The Plain, OS Explorer (1:25 000) 118 Shaftesbury & Cranborne Chase. Or Garmin GB Discoverer 1:50K Southern England & Wales (GPS) Summary A short woodland blast on the outskirts of Shaftesbury with a couple of technical treats in store. 1 Start either from the small car park at the edge of the trading estate or on Wincombe Lane itself. Head north east along Wincombe Lane following bridleway signs. At the junction at the corner of the woods turn right to follow the wide track along the edge of the woods. Keep an eye out for bombholes on the left for a play... 2 After 1.1km you’ll reach a junction. Turn sharp left, almost doubling back on yourself, to descend the singletrack in the gully – it’s boggy in the wet with possible fallen trees, so take care. At the bottom climb back out of woods and through farm to a lane – yes, the bridleway goes through the garden. 3 At the lane turn left and climb on Tarmac. After 500m look out for gate to bridleway on the right through woods. If you reach another road you’ve missed it. Follow the little-used track to join road at junction. Go straight over to follow road opposite and descend for 400m. 4 Look out for a bridleway forking right up the bank – it’s easy to miss. Climb, then follow singletrack along the ridge. A steep, twisty, descent brings you back to the road. 5 Turn right and follow road for approx 3km, taking the third turn on the right (if you reach the A30 you’ve gone too far). Climb on lane then track. At the top turn left then straight on at junction of four trails. Follow track back to start point.

Start/Finish Shaftesbury ST 869233 Total distance 55.8km (34.7 miles) Total ascent 258m (4127ft) Time 4-6 hours Maps OS Landranger (1:50 000) 183 Yeovil & Frome, OS Landranger 184 Salisbury & The Plain, OS Explorer (1:25 000) 118 Shaftesbury & Cranborne Chase. Or Garmin GB Discoverer 1:50K Southern England & Wales (GPS) Summary A substantial ride on little-used trails with a mixture of open downland and wooded trails. 1 Start either from the small car park at the edge of the trading estate or on Wincombe Lane itself. Follow steps 1-4 of the Moderate route. 2 Turn right and follow the road for about 3km to Ludwell. Cross A30 and climb on Tarmac. Continue straight over at crossroads. After 2.5km take bridleway left opposite an airfield. At road turn right then fork left through a gate onto bridleway. Go through a gate, carry straight on then left at junction and descend to a gravel track. 3 Turn left and follow the track along the valley for 2km to a junction at the edge of woods. Turn left and climb. Carry straight on to descend to junction. Turn right then immediately left. Climb then descend, bearing left at corner of woods. After 1km turn left to meet road at Ashmore Farm. 4 Turn right, then right in Ashmore to head north, then first right again. At junction join bridleway directly opposite. Turn right on road then left on bridleway after 400m. Descend to Tollard Royal, turn left then left again onto wide track. At road go straight over to descend on bridleway through trees. At junction turn right and right again to climb back to ridge on Tarmac. 5 At junction turn left then fork left onto dirt track. After 300m turn left between fields and descend to road. Turn right. After 1.5km turn right up a lane. At junction turn right along ridge track. Rejoin the road after 2km. Continue on road for just under 2km until road swings right and descends. 6 Continue along track to Win Green Hill. Cross cattle grid, past car park and then right through gate into a field. Descend to left of fence to the road. Cross road to bridleway. 7 At road turn left then second right to meet A30 opposite church. Cross over to road opposite (slightly to right). Take second left and climb on lane then track. At top turn left then straight on at crossroads. Follow track back to start point.

30 mile loop. Do it anticlockwise. Good descent to pub at half way point. Second half has a long slog along track but rest of it is a fun scenic excursion.
