The way points of this bicycle route:
This route presents a fast, no-roads way to get from 24th & Lamar to the Town Lake trails using the Shoal Creek Hike & Bike trail through the western edge of downtown Austin, TX. Note that, due to seasonal flooding along Shoal Creek, portions of this route can become significantly muddy or simply impassable.
If you play tennis, you may want to note the courts to the east across Lamar.
Go to the west across the bridge to come to the south end of Peese Park. There is a playground here as well as, more importantly, public restrooms and a water fountain.
It can get quite muddy here for a while after Shoal Creek floods. It is also one of the darker road underpasses when it is dim or dark out. If you want to avoid it, take the bridge to the south end of Peese Park and use Parkway and Baylor to tag back in at W 12th St & Shoal Creek Blvd.
There is the north end of the one section on this route that is not on paved sidewalk or bike path. It involves a beginning to intermediate (depending on seasonal disturbances) off-road creek crossing. To address circumstantial or seasonal need to avoid this section on a commute, use the stairs, the sidewalk along 5th, Bowie, and 3rd to cut back in at the bridge to Austin Music Hall.
Depending on your direction, there's a little jump here from pavement to the creek bed below.
Depending on season, there can be water flowing here; however, it is generally easily passable.
Here's another transition point from pebble slope out of the creek bed to paved path.
Transition from paved path to sandy slope.
Transition from sandy slope to creek bed.
Transition from creek bed to narrow poured concrete. When water levels in Shoal Creek occasionally rise, this is probably one of the first segments on the route that will become impassable.
Transition from poured concrete ridge to pebbly creek bed.
After a quick climb from creek bed up to paved path, the tiny off-road section of the route is complete
Watch out for other bikes and peds here.
This should be pretty close the terminal end of the commuter rail system that is currently being implemented.
Take the bridge to the east to come out right beside the Austin Music Hall at 3rd St and Nueces.
Tag back in here if you took the high road around the off-road section.
Sharp turn. Watch out for other bikes and peds.
That ties up the end of this route.
