The way points of this bicycle route:
Start at the Sonic; This will make more sense when you get finished.
Head down Buck Jones Road. It turns into two lane so it will be kind of tight in spots. This is the only busy two-lane on the route.
Nice up-hill warm up here.
Take the right on Nottingham to miss the ugly traffic ahead.
Turn right on Walnut. Take the sidewalk if you want. This is busy five-lane and you'll have to turn left ahead.
Turn left on Greenwood Circle. This is residential.
At the intersection of Greenwood and Vickie Drive, go straight onto the bike path.
At the traffic circle, take the third right, or go the wrong way and take the first left. This is residential so it won't make much difference.
Take this right onto Glengary.
Find the left onto the bike trail right next to this guy's driveway; it's got a green half-gate.
Wind your way up to the bridge.
Stop in the middle of the bridge to check your time; it takes me 20 minutes. Get a drink and wave at the cars.
Nice downhill to the sharp left at the bottom.
Back onto city streets.
Take the right onto Forest Park Way. There's a silly bike lane space that goes up to Wellingborough.
This is another silly turn here; the bike lane ends.
Take the left on Kirkfield. It's the very first left onWellingborough.
Take this left onto Hunter's Crossing. This road is due to be repaved so it's got raised manholes and some loose gravel. Tough uphill starts here.
Take the right onto Durington; more uphill...
Take the right onto Pink Acres and level out. Check your pulse.
Turn left onto Apex Macedonia. I take the sidewalk because I'm only going one block and then I'm turning left. Otherwise, you're crossing a five-lane with a median just to go one block to turn left and Apex-Macedonia can be high-traffic.
Left on Piney Plains. This is a big five-lane but it's not got much traffic on it. Nice long level stretch ahead; time to make some time.
Piney Plains turns into Dillard. Still more gentle grades.
Go straight through this big intersection across Walnut.
Dillard is five-lane commercial here. Moderate traffic but mostly level. Crossing Jones Franklin can be tricky; wait for the light if you have to.
Continue on Dillard. This is an elementary school so traffic can be heavy for brief periods. The left onto Smith Drive is at the top of nice little grade. Check your pulse.
After the left on Smith, take a left on Olive. This is more residential
This is the best downhill on the route. Get some speed because you're going to need it.
Green Valley is the steepest upgrade (except for short uphills on the Lake Johnson Bike Trail.) At the top of the hill, you'll be breathing hard. Check your pulse and take the left onto Avent Ferry.
Stop in the middle of the Bridge to check your time; mine is 20 minutes from the last check. Get a drink.
This right onto the Lake Johnson Bike Trail is very steep; shift into lower gear before you try it. The up hill is short so, at the top shift back down.
The bike trail will have plenty of steep ups and downs plus some sharp turns. Lots of pedestrians in the afternoon. Take it easy until you become familiar with the layout.
There's a right turn at the top of a nice hill. I get my max heart rate for the whole route here.
At the bottom of this hill, you'll see the bridge over the spillway to your left. Take the straight to get to Lake Dam Road in the afternoons because the pedestrian traffic across the dam can be heavy and they got no place to go except in the lake or down the bank. In the mornings, take the left to go over the dam.
Take the left on Lake Dam. They have this silly bridge to get to the sidewalk which I take to get away from traffic. This is two-lane.
Take the left onto Avent Ferry. This is a big five lane.
Take the right onto Athens Drive. Heavy traffic when the high school lets out. Athens drive is flat so get going...
Take Athens all the way to Jones Franklin.
Take Jones Franklin back to Sonic and get a slushee. You've earned it. My best time is 1:01:00
