The way points of this bicycle route:
Turn south here to Trentham East for quieter stretch of road
Turn right to head to Tretham
Pleasant pond and park is just past the center, nice for a breather.
rejoin A-road here
Very nice forested ride here, rolling hills.
Traffic can be mayhem on weekends - especially on a market day. Take care!
Could stop for a nice morning tea here. Very touristy town, lots of options.
Maybe detour down to the public springs? They're supposed to be healthy :)
Some steep hills in this section - but easier in this direction than coming from the north IMO ;-)
From here to Maldon, terrain is relatively easier than last 40 km
Turn right at main road and cross over Loddon river into Newstead
There's a couple of stores and a decent cafe here. Head north out of town on the Maldon Rd
Pretty, historic township. Arrange to stay overnight, or ride to Castlemaine and take train back to Melbourne. If you have the time, go up Mt Tarrengower for great views
This route traces a quiet back way to Castlemaine. Could just take the main roads instead. This route has some unsealed road and good quality fire trail.
Follow vintage railway line. Road turns into an unsealed track, but with good surface
Nice forest track
Cross over track here into Carpenters Lane, or continue to follow railway track until Muckleford North (although track fades away after creek, making heavier going)
Turn right in direction of Muckleford
Turn left into Castlemaine Rd before crossing train line
V-line back to Melbourne! There are some good cafes in Castlemaine if you have some time to wait.
