The way points of this bicycle route:
Begin at 5-way roundabout (surprisingly safe). Then 1st R, R onto path, then follow tarred, marked cycleway.
Obey stop sign; watch for traffic up and down the hills either side.
Prepare for stop sign at Dibbs St; again, obey & watch for traffic.
R off cycleway here, then 1st L onto Bailey.
Ride decisively across roundabout.
Turn L across gates. Hourly weekday and 2 hourly weekend trains to Sydney or Newcastle.
L at T-section, then 1st R at lights. Tricky after 9am Mon-Sat.
SA at lights onto cycleway.
Look for busy roundabout downhill to your right. Take the branch of the cycleway that goes towards it.
Rejoin road here.
Stop for a Red Bull. Last drink stop on route until Stanford Merthyr.
Cross into middle lane, then SA at roundabout with fast traffic. Ride decisively.
Turn L following signs to West Wallsend & Kurri Kurri.
Turn R at roundabout; again follow signs to Kurri Kurri.
Stay on main road; sharpish L. Going starts getting tough. Narrow but smooth shoulder next 3km.
Shoulder widens; but is rough in places. Very satisfactory road with light to medium traffic.
Very good section of road; smooth wide shoulder.
Shoulder and road very wide. However, shoulder has erosion bumps in places that are quite difficult to see; don't hoon it.
Very satisfactory road; adequate shoulders with minor bumps.
Road into Kurri Kurri is wide; but has bumps running across the shoulders. Medium to medium-high traffic.
L into Railway, R into Hampden (bumpy edges), L into Coronation, R into Allworth.
