The way points of this bicycle route:
Begin at 5-way roundabout (surprisingly safe). Then 1st R, R onto path, then follow tarred, marked cycleway.
Obey stop sign; watch for traffic up and down the hills either side.
Prepare for stop sign at Dibbs St; again, obey & watch for traffic.
R off cycleway here, then 1st L onto Bailey.
Ride decisively across roundabout.
Turn L across gates. Hourly weekday and 2 hourly weekend trains to Sydney or Newcastle.
R into Mackie Avenue (after disused bus shelter)
R into Jellicoe Pde after crossing drain, then SA onto cycleway parallel to drain.
SA across lights onto cycleway past hockey fields.
Cross Turton Rd at traffic lights.
Road narrows after lights.
Station St has a nice wide shoulder.
Trains to Maitland; hourly on weekends; more frequent on weekdays.
Prepare to stop at pedestrian crossing.
L into Macquarie, then R into Fitzroy. This bypasses Mayfield Shops and its parked cars.
Move decisively out of left lane to avoid the many cars turning left into Maud St. Then fast, easy ride to Sandgate.
Watch for traffic entering from left. A traffic blackspot during peak-hours. The ride to Hexham Bridge is fast and easy after this.
Hourly trains to Maitland all week round.
Hazard; Watch for traffic entering at 70+km/hr from your left. Stop on shoulder if necessary.
This section to Masonite Rd has given me far more than its share of flat tyres; watch for glass and sharp objects on shoulder. It is a very quick section of the ride, though.
Take Raymond Terrace exit, then R at next roundabout.
R into Tathra
R into Elizabeth, then follow cycleway and ride right along Rosemount, then take next 3 left turns.
