The way points of this bicycle route:

Bronx

starting coming north + east from New York City on Shore Rd near Orchard Beach + City Island and the Pelham Parkway bike trail.

New York

(road name changes to Pelham Rd)

Pelham

(several good water views in Glen Island Park to right -- but the sign said that all visitors must have Westchester county resident ID)

(water view in Leif Ericsson park to right)

New Rochelle

Right - Main St / rt 1 North [high traffic road, two lanes in each direction, often parked cars, which can make it a tricky to ride - but there were signs saying that it's an official bike route - (it's not so easy to find clearly better alternatives thru here)

Right - LaFevre Lane: goes to Five Islands Park with water views (a.k.a Oakwook Island). What's special here is thet the islands are enclosed inside a cove, and there are bridges to visit two of them.

(can reach two of the islands over bridges) -- Turn around and return to route 1

Right - rt 1 North

(shorter here is to continue straight on rt 1, but turning off as shown in the route has quiet roads over a quiet bridge to a quiet view over the water with trees and rocks.)

Right - Dillon Rd, later becomes Pryer Manor Rd, to its end

Left - Pryor Lane

quick Right - Helena Av, becomes Park Av, to its end

bear Right to go around loop

(for a nicer view and pleasant path, leave the road here and walk on the paved path by the water)

(pass by Circle Av, instead continue Straight to make larger loop on Park Av)

quick bear Left - Larchmont Av

quick Right - Magnolia Av - (though simpler is to continue straight on Larchmont Av, but we didn't check that in 2009)

Left - Ocean Av, to its end

Left - Woodbine Av

quick Right - Monroe Av

(to shorten the route, but miss seeing more of Larchmont + Mamaroneck, continue Straight on Monroe Av to its end, then Right on rt 1 north. This requires much more distance on busy route 1, much of which is avoided by following this route as given -- but it's not clear that Palmer Av in this route is actually easier or safer for bicycling than Route 1. The point of this route is to offer choices.

Left - Willow Av - (but we didn't check this in 2009)

Right - Beach Av

Left - Ocean Av

Left - Stuyvesant Av

Larchmont

(to see more of Larchmont's shops + food options + Metro North train station - (but more traffic with parked cars) - continue Straight onto Soundview Dr + bear Right onto Parkway St + Palmer Av

Right - Rock Hill Terrace

across Larchmont Av onto Vanderburgh Av, to its end

Left + quick Right, from Hall Av to Palmer Av

Right - Delancey Av

Left - Prospect Av

Mamaroneck

(to see more of the Mamaroneck shops + food options + Metro North train station, turn Left at traffic light) - (what's different about Mamaroneck Av is that it's a main business street with angle parking)

(to see water views at Harbor Island Park, turn Right at traffic light)

Straight across Mamaroneck Av at traffic light

curve Left + turn Right onto Tompkins Av

Left - Melbourne Av

Right - Brook St, to its end

Right - Barry Av to traffic light

(if not much traffic, could just turn Left on route 1 is simpler) - otherwise Straight across rt 1 then make next Left

Left - Stuart Av, to its end

Right - Route 1 North

Rye

Right - Oakland Beach Av, to its end

Left - Forest Av

(it's shorter here to continue straight, but turning off as the route shows a classic seaside amusement park (about the only one on the Sound coast), and a boardwalk with a nice view of the water and somewhat-classic swimming-beach building

first Right - Rye Beach Av, to its end

Left - (unsigned) toward Playland Park

bear Right into Playland Park

water view on boardwalk to right

turn around to exit from Playland Park

Right - Playland Parkway

Right - Forest Av, to its end

Right - Grace Church St

(of course it's shorter to just go straight here, but the turn given in this route goes by a unique quiet cove, on a road with kinda interesting riding

first Right - Kirby Lane

Right - Grace Church St

Right - Don Bosco Pl (opposite Midland Av)

Port Chester

(Metro North train station to left, food options) -- continue Straight onto Abendroth Av, to its end

Right - Mill St

Byram

(if not so much traffic, could try going straight here onto Delavan Av, but that often has lots of parked cars on an uphill)

Right - Water St

first Left - William St

Left - Mead Av, to its end - (could avoid more of Delavan Av by continuing straight here, but ahead it's a one-way street)

Right - Delavan Av - (road crosses under I-95 multiple times, changes names multiple times)

Greenwich

Right - Prospect St

Left - Horseneck Lane

Right - Shore Rd

Left - enter Grass Island Park

Right - loop around in park

curve Left toward exit from park

Right - Shore Rd, to its end

Right - Horseneck Lane, to its end

Left - Arch St

Right - Arch St (climb hill)

more shops on to Left up hill, but it's a one-way street - (could consider walking up with bike, the turn around and ride back down)

Greenwich

Right - Greenwich Av - (down hill) - (food options)

(finish by Greenwich train station - Metro North)

Route Details

Along the coast of the Long Island Sound from New York City + Pelham, east thru Westchester county to Port Chester NY + Greenwich CT. Offers several options for riding to the best water views, connecting to train stations, and for avoiding riding on the route 1.
Connects to route Greenwich to Darien coast -- search Bikely for [lisn3].
For more info and connections see www.roberts-1.com/x/m - routeID [lisn2].
Most people will not want to ride it exactly as in the route - (though we did on one nice summer day) - but it's easy to see how to skip the parts you don't want to try. Detailed labels on points form a cue sheet (click on Show, select Cue Sheet). Positions of points have been tweaked and partly tested for GPS navigation in the East-bound direction. Route not checked by us since 2009.
