The way points of this bicycle route:
Webster is busy and has narrow lanes, so avoid it as far as you can
Walgreens is a good place to stop for a beverage. There's also a Starbucks and a Fed Ex Kinko's here
If you aren't willing to brave the (noisy sooty narrow) tube, here's the place to grab the AC Transit bus to Oakland. These run very regularly during most of the day, but you should probably consult a schedule if travelling late (they only run overnight but just hourly in the late hours)
I typically cut to the sidewalk here because there's no good place to do it ahead, and once you get past the bus stop it's usually clear of pedestrians
Beware motorists already accellerating, distracted by thoughts of the merge ahead
Here's where it starts getting hairy and narrow
Beware pedestrian staircase- make sure you aren't going to fast, and/or ring bell.
Gentle curve to the right, but kind of blind- don't go to fast. Do ring bell. You may encounter pedestrians and cyclists going in either direction. I've even encountered people with their belongings in a shopping cart, who you really can't get past. I also witnessed a fellow with a milk crate full of fish being loaded into an ambulance as the emergency vehicles blocked the motorists from entering. It was quite surreal to see the tube empty of all but cyclists for once.
Carry bike up stairs to right if going to Amtrak. Proceed up Harrison to 11th, and go left to Broadway for Oakland City Center BART, or right on 7th, then left on Oak for Lake Merritt BART. Continue up Oak for Museum Of California, the large auditorium, or Lake Merritt itself.
Trains to San Jose, Fremont, Sacramento
counter ticketing is available as well as machines. prices seem high to me, but they are cut in half if you buy 10-ride tickets, which expire in six weeks. Trains go directly to San Jose, Sacramento, Stockton, and Bakersfield from here. amtrak.com
