Watford Junction

Turn right out of Watford Junction Station

Flag Pub

Go past The Flag pub

Bridle Path

Take a right turn down the small lane called Bridle Path

Bridle Path

Get off your bike and walk under the pedestrian tunnel to cross under St. Albans road

St Albans Road

Head North Along St. Albans Road. This is quite a busy road through suburban North Watford. You will only be on this road for a few hundred metres. The route soon turns down much quieter roads.

St Albans Road

At this point the cycle path crosses into the middle of St Albans Road. This is to allow traffic to filter off to the left. Continue straight ahead.

Brixton Road

Turn right off St Albans Road into Brixton Road (it is marked as a dead end but there is a small gap at the end you can wheel your bike through)

Brixton Road

Take a left at the end of the road, heading towards the small gap at the end of the Cul-De-Sac which you should wheel your bike through.

Bradshaw Road

Continue straight along Bradshaw Road

Traffic Lights

At the end of Bradshaw Road is a pedestrian crossing with traffic lights over Balmoral Road. Cross at the traffic lights and turn right under the railway bridge.

Knutsford Avenue

Turn left along Knutsford Avenue

Bushey Mill Lane / Tudor Avenue

Go straight over the traffic lights at Bushey Mill Lane (by the Tudor Arms pub). This takes you into Tudor Avenue. Continue straight up Tudor Avenue.

A41

At the end of Tudor Avenue you come to the main A41 road. At this point you should see a gap (for pedestrians) in the central reservation. Get off your bike at this point and cross the A41 using this gap.

North side of A41

Having crossed the A41 turn right and take the small ramp (about 5 metres away) which doubles back and leads down into the small park.

Meriden Community Centre

Cross the small park towards the community centre and, crossing the small car-park, turn left onto Garsmouth Way (towards the high rise blocks)

York Way / The Phillipers

At the end of Garsmouth Way (having passed the high rise blocks on your left), turn left into York Way and then immediately first right into The Phillipers

The Gossamers (mini-roundabout)

Continue to cycle along The Phillipers. Eventually, at the end of The Phillipers, you will bear right down a small hill towards a mini-roundabout and the road will meet another road called The Gossamers. Turn left along The Gossamers at the mini-roundabout.

Garston Lane Bridge / Traffic Lights

Go under the railway bridge by the traffic lights.

Codicote Drive

Take the second right after the railway bridge into Codicote Drive

Garston Park

Entering Garston Park, take the left fork of the cycle paths which heads off towards the far left hand corner of the park

St Albans Road Cycle Path

When leaving Garston Park turn right along the cycle path that goes north along the side of St Albans Road. Continue along this cycle path.

Bucknall's Lane

Leave the cycle path and turn right along Bucknalls Lane

BRE

The entrance to BRE is just across the bridge over the motorway. Ask the security guard about cycle parking and showers.

Route Details

This is a relatively quiet route to get to BRE from Watford Junction station. It is mostly on minor roads and cycle paths. Note that there are a couple of points where you should get off your bike and wheel it. A faster ride (on much busier roads) is also on this website.

In general, non-folding bikes bikes can be taken on all services to Watford Junction, with the exception of peak time services travelling TOWARDS London termini in the morning and AWAY FROM London termini in the evening. Folding bikes can generally be carried on all services. Some services will require a bike reservation. These rules are subject to change and you are advised to check with National Rail Enquiries before travelling.
