North Chatham

Malden Bridge

to avoid dirt on Highland Rd (but steeper climbing + longer distance): instead continue straight on rt 13 for 1.5Mi, sharp Left onto Rock City Rd for 2.6Mi (climb hill almost 500 vertical ft, including 175ft at 8% steepness grade, then 190ft at least 9% grade), R on Hartigan to rejoin main route. Adds 1.6Mi to route. [last checked by us in 2001]

Chatham

to avoid dirt on Hartigan Rd (but longer distance): instead continue straight on Rock City Rd 1.4Mi to its end, turn R on rt 295 going south then west for 1.8Mi [HH - wide road with some shoulder as of 2007], (food), then turn Left on Birge Hill Rd to rejoin main route. Adds 1.9Mi to route. [last checked 2007].

second half of a moderately hilly 38 mile loop which has miles of quiet farm country in the west, beautiful hilltop views and long downhill cruising in the east, and several historic sites.
