Take Luggate Rd east out of town
L on Lake Hawea Rd
Lakeside road has great views of mountains on other side.
Road climbs over a col to the next lake
Stayed at lodge behind caravan park. Hotel had good food. End of day 1 from Wanaka
Road climbs to Haast Pass (480m) Fairly easy gradient.
Fast and steep descent starts
Bridge over river. Picnic spot on left for a break.
Beautiful braided river and valley scenery
reserve with a short walk to the river is worth a stop along here.
Stayed in YHA. Town has a store and hotel. End of day 2 from Wanaka
Haast Highway follows coast northeast.
Hilly section
Stayed in motel. Lovely lake for a swim or hire a canoe. End of day 3 from Wanaka
Wide river valley.
Stayed in hotel in main street. Took a helicopter ride up to Mount Cook. Rode down to Lake Mathieson and rode around the walking track. End of day 4 from Wanaka
Steep hills on way to Franz Joseph
Another town where you can view the glaciers from Mt Cook. Lunch spot.
Lake on left.
Another lake
Stayed in Pub. End of day 5 from Wanaka
Took a cruise on a little steam boat. Rare birds to be seen.
Stayed in hotel. End of day 6 from Wanaka.
End of tour from Lake Tekapo. Took train back to CHCh over Arthurs Pass. & days from Wanaka.
