The way points of this bicycle route:
Start in the parking lot next to the store. Get there early to get a space. You might want to roll back to the beach a short distance so you can say you went ftom sea level to 10023 in one day.
Take some time every now and again to snap some photos.
Don't go too fast. Pace yourself. YOu have a long way to go.
You are gonna love this s turn on the way back down.
This ia a great place to take a rest, the first of many. The cafe across the street is a great place to say hi to the locals, grab a muffin & a cup of joe.
Yea it pitches up a bit here but it will flatten out. More or less. Just a warm up for the balance of the ride.
Hanamu Rd. You need to turn right here. If you don't, & want to just for grins get real warmed up. go straight here to the top of Olinda Rd. & back to here. you will have grabbed aan extra 2000 ft of climbing. I know, I did it 'cuz I missed this turn. It gets Very Steep just a bit up the road. And fantastic views & neighborhoods!
About as flat & down hill as you will see until you turn around at the top to head down. Enjoy while you can.
The down hill bike tour Co.s tend to pick up their riders here at the triangle. You on the other hand will be earning your down hill romp,
Cross the Highway with care here. Most of the cars along this stretch are tourist cars & have no idea how to drive with respect for anything else on the road.
I stopped here, hopped ofer the guard rail & took a leak here. As good a place as any and the cars really can't see what you are doing anyway.
There is a store/market & restaurant somewhere about here on your right. Stop & fill up your water bottles. Maybe have a breif breakfast at the Restaurant.
Make the left here. As the sign says, only 22 more miles to the top!
I think this is the wide sholder that I stopped to fiddle with my bike & readjust my junk strapped to my pack. good spot to watch the carloads of tourists go by. You on the other hand are a bike load of tourist(singular).
You'll cross three cattle grates on the way up(& down). Go straight across them especially if the road is damp. Dead square to the bars with speed and you will be OK. Walk them if you have any fear.
As the morning wears on you will see more and more of the down hill bike tours heading up and down. Some will look at to as if you are nuts ('natch) and some with a longing look of I wish I were you. remember you ARE having more fun than they could ever have just coasting down.
Or maybe that wide sholder was here and that house just up a bit on the left selling fruit.
Alpine in the tropics. Kind of amazing!
Almost to the park entrance! Get your photo taken in front of the sign. The visitors center is not too far past the guard shack.
Some of these left curves are easier if you can ride up the inside lane if there are no on comming cars.
You have got to stop and look around & take a pix or two. Note how that land is slowly turning into a moonscape.
Yea the road is just above you to your right. Yet so far...
Do not let the cars intimadate you as you make the inside curves. take your lane & make tha cars wait their turn to pass. Just about everybody driving a car up at this point will be fairly courteous to bikers.
Take your lane!
you are almost 9200 ft above sea level.
You are on the last long straight leg ov the accent. You are almost there! you CAN make it!
If you hang too long in the hut at the top & cool off, this stretch on the way down will be mighty chilly if you didn't bring warm enough top layers to insulate yourself with.
The visitor'a hut is in sight! gotta get there to claim the whole 10023 ft of climbing.
Check out the other lot & hiking after you complete the Ride to the Sun.
Ta Da! Take in the view & loads of photos. You eraned them.
Just think of the roll you wil have on your way back down. It will take you at least 1.5 hrs to get to the parking lot.
