The way points of this bicycle route:
This is a beautiful ride in Topanga State park with a beautiful ocean and view of skyscrappers of downtown LA at the mid point of this ride. The ride starts at about 2/3rds of the way up southern end of Reseda Blvd where there is a single tract called Cabrello Canyon that will take you up to dirt Mulhulland. The single tract is 1.8 miles and involves a little technical climbing of about 550 feet. The average grade for the climbing portion is about 12%. This will get your ticker going pretty good. Once you reach dirt Mulhulland take a little break on the bench and enjoy the great view looking down into the San Fernando Valley.Turn right and there is a little more climbing but the grade is considerably less than the single tract. At 2.8 miles turn left onto a nice fireroad and now enter into the bowels of Topanga State Park which is the largest park in LA. At 4.9 miles you reach the "hub". This is a good place to relieve yourself because there is an odd house here. Take the fireroad that descends. Just stay on this main fireroad and at the 10 mile point after climbing a steep section there is a trail junction. Bear to the right and follow it to the end which will be about another .5 miles. Now you are at the this beautiful spot I mentioned at the beginning of the ride. Sit down on the bench and if the day is clear and free of smog or haze you will enjoy a fantastic view. Straight in front of you lies Catalina Island in the Pacific. Follow the coastline to the south and Santa Moinca Pier is clearly visable and that last outcropping of land jutting out is Palos Verdes. To your left lies LA and the San Gabriel mountains. Straight below you is Pacific Palasades. This is a good time to refuel the old bod because the return trip is harder than than getting here. By the time you finish this ride you will have climbed over 3000 feet and burned close to 2000 calories. Lets turn around and remember bear left at the next junction at the 11.1 mile point. At 13.7 miles you got a nice 400 foot climb for about .9 of a mile and then a short descent. At the 15 mile point we come to another junction. Go straight and start climbing towards Eagle Rock on a kind of rocky double tract. Eagle Rock is a huge rock that juts out from the mountain. If you are adventureous climb onto eagle rock. Otherwise enjoy a well deserved rest on the bench and enjoy a neat view looking towards the Pacific. Still some more climbing awaits you on this slightly technical doubletract. Follow it to its end at the Hub. Turn left and retrace your route back to dirt Mulhulland. Turn right and shortly on your left there is a sign saying this fireroad leads to Reseda Blvd. Its all downhill from here. Take the fireraod and at paved Reseda Blvd continue the descent until you reach your car. Waatch youre speed. You will probably be going around 30 mph. Hope you enjoyed the ride.
