The way points of this bicycle route:
Beginning of HWY 18. If I did this ride again, I would avoid 18 because of several areas of very limited shoulder space. Tiger mountain was particularly bad.
Beginning of hill climb. There were many areas of guard rails very close to driving lanes, especially around bends on the way up. Again, I would avoid 18 altogether if I did this ride again.
This is the beginning of a trail that leads to the start of the Iron Horse Trail
Here begins the trail. There are some campsites here where we stayed our first night. The trail is pretty smooth and packed gravel during the entire section up over the pass.
Great train trestles are scattered along this section of the trail
A good light is required through this tunnel. It's dark, damp, cool, and over 2 miles long.
There are some bathrooms here with showers and potable water
This is where we spent our second night. Plenty of camping with some bike specific campsites.
Beautiful section along the river
Thorp fruit stand for some refreshments
This section leads straight to the CWU campus
McDonald's stop...
This HWY meets back up with the Iron Horse a few miles down the road
You can't continue on this bridge over I-90. You have to pass under the freeway via Stevens Road
This is the Yakima Army Land section of the trail. The sand was so deep that we couldn't continue on it anymore.
We were forced to cut across the sagebrush to get back to the pavement. This was unpleasant, but our only option as it was getting late in the day
Back on I-90 after heaving our bikes over the barbed wire.
Beginning of the very fun 10 miles down to Vantage
Motel where we spent our third night
There isn't much of a shoulder on the bridge so the best bet is to not waste any time as you cross.
Exit I-90 and head down 283 toward Ephrata
This is a nice and flat highway with room to ride and not too much traffic
Beautiful scenery from here to Sun Lakes State Park
Rest stop with bathrooms and water
