The way points of this bicycle route:
This is my commuting route (6-7am, 430-530pm). Some routes are a bit shorter, but this is the safest with decent roads.
Watch out for debris and harsh railroad crossings.
The trick in heading north out of Tacoma is that you have to cross the Puyallup River. There are only 4 bridges in the Tacoma area and the Lincoln Ave Bridge is the smallest and safest.
Hop on the sidewalk at this turn to avoid the semi truck traffic.
SR 509 bike lane starts here on the cloverleaf onramp.
Watch for the dog(s) on the south side of 12th Street right after you make this turn. Be prepared for a chase!
The shoulder disappears at a creek crossing here. Watch for semi trucks from behind before taking the lane.
Hwy 99 is not lit beyond this point. Good headlights/tail lights/reflectors suggested for commuting Oct-Mar. A plenty of shoulder covered with a plenty of gravel.
Hop on the sidewalk as you make this turn. There is no shoulder on the overpass and dump trucks often turn right at the next light.
Hop back into the street to cross the intersection.
