The way points of this bicycle route:
Start from the Cooks River Bike Path at the intersection of Augusta St and Morgan Place.
Right into Hedges Ave.
Right into Liverpool Rd (Hume Hwy), this can get very busy. There is bus stop lane and entrance to the servo on the far side of Liverpool Rd you can make a dash into.
Into the lane...
If there is heavy westbound traffic you can wait here in the bus stop lane till you get a break in the traffic. Its uphill, not steep, to the Roberts Rd intersection.
Traffic lights. You need to be in the left lane here, we will go under the bridge, left, and head south. Note the street mapping is a bit out here, the aerial image is accurate.
Bike lane starts soon.
Shortly this road merges with Roberts Rd, it typically has alot of fast moving traffic. Get ready to take your lane and keep your speed up till the next lights.
Bike lane ends.
We want to go right at the next lights. If you are fast or the traffic isn't bad head over to the right turn lanes. If you can't make it, stay in the left lane and do a hook turn at the lights, or turn left at the lights and do a U-turn.
Right into Norfolk Rd at the traffic lights.
Okay, you are out of the worst of the traffic, you can slow down and relax a bit. Its normally low traffic from here to Juno Pde.
Roundabout, left into Maiden St.
Rondabout, cross Russell St.
Roundabout, cross Rawson Rd.
Left into Juno Pde. We want to do a dog leg into Acacia Ave. Juno Pde can be very busy at peak times and fast. Be careful. Its best to time your crossing so you don't get stuck out in the middle of Juno Pde with vehicles bearing down on you.
Right into Acacia Ave.
Isn't it good to get off Juno Pde? Typically quiet from here to Wattle St.
Roundabout, cross Wangee Rd.
Roundabout, cross Chaseling St.
Roundabout, cross Old Kent Rd.
Left into Wattle St. Its left turn only here. We really want to continue south on Acacia Ave. Go left into Wattle St, head to the traffic island, theres a gap in it you can wait if traffic is heavy.
Left into Acacia Ave. Little traffic from here to Punchbowl Rd.
Right into Punchbowl Rd at the traffic lights.
Its a gentle uphill from here to the bridge over the railway. Peak times Punchbowl Rd is busy.
In peak traffic from here to the traffic lights just the other side of the railway the left lane is typically full of qued motor vehicles. Right lane becomes right turn only near the bridge.
Traffic lights at intersection with The Boulevarde, continue along Punchbowl Rd. Generally down hill from here to part way down Rossmore Ave. Jack Walsh bicycle shop is coming up on your right just after the lights.
Left into Rossmore Ave. Watch out for the drunks leaving the pub.
Signalised pedestrian crossing.
Roundabout at intersection with Hillcrest St, continue along Rossmore Ave. Watch out for cars coming out of Hillcrest St on your left. Bottom of the hill, theres a small climb to Canterbury Rd.
Right into Canterbury Rd at the traffic lights.
This is Canterbury Rd, normally horrible to cycle on, buts its only a short downhill dash from here to the next lights.
Left into Belmore Rd at the traffic lights. Its downhill from here to the next lights at Wiggs Rd.
Traffic lights at intersection with Wiggs Rd. Its a gentle uphill from here to the M5. Sometimes there is alot of traffic leaving Wiggs Rd and heading south on Belmore Rd from here.
The road surface in the left lane is really lumpy and crap for about 30m.
On your left is a park, you can head through that to a lane that takes you to Jindalee Pl. Or coming up on your right you can turn off Belmore Rd and head to the paths and back streets that take you to Salt Pan Creek.
Traffic lights at exit from M5, continue along Belmore Rd North. If you want to get on to the M5 westbound (yes bikes are legal) you'll need to head over to the right turn lane after this. For the adventurous, it is possible to jump the fence and carry your bike through the scrub to the M5 eastbound, though I don't recommend it.
Theres a bike path on your left (sharp turn left, careful of vehicles coming up behind you). To your right is the community centre, also a skate park, new lake and partially completed path to Salt Pan Creek are there but not shown on the aerial view. The previous path you can see to Salt Pan Creek was ripped up. March 2007, work to complete the path is starting again.
