The way points of this bicycle route:
This is one of my favorite quick MTB routes. I go fast down London Road to get to the bridleways as fast as possible. The 12 mile route avoids main roads.
Careful with the pinch points after the railway bridge. Move out to stop cars trying to overtake OR use the wide pavement.
R at lights into Mile House Lane
L into New House Park
R into Heron's Lane - a sandy track through trees
Turn L into Napsbury Lane
Over the bridge, turn R into North End Cottages (aka The Drive)
After the last house on R, take ramp onto pavement (if nobody on it) to avoid pavement edge ahead.
Just before bollards, go sharp R onto tarmac track.
When the tarmac goes left, follow the rough track ahead, with wooden fence on R.
At the bottom of the field, turn R along hedge.
Steep drop under M25 bridge
Turn left as soon as you cross the bridge.
Cross the Watling Street and turn left on the opposite footpath.
R into farm road.
Keep L to avoid farm
Narrow track from here
When field opens to R, follow track across it to bridge over Ver.
Over bridge & R by river
Up to Drop Lane & R.
R off lane and over footbridge to Ver Valley path
Across Smug Oak Lane to Moor Mill entrance
Good place for refreshment and to see the working mill-wheels inside. Leaving, follow road round the back to gravelly path under M25
Left across builders yard entrance and round iron gate into fields.
Take right fork to avoid small gate on the main path.
Steep drop into Hyde Lane. then L. Look out for cars!
Take the ramp up to a bridge on R, over the Ver
Take the right or left fork between the lakes. Going left you'll have to turn R before the railway (at a signpost) and through the trees back to the track.
Emerge into Branch Rd and cross to narrow path through railway embankment. This is a footpath so give way to pedestrians.
Cross playing field to Park St Lane an trurn R onto road
Turn L onto Watling St, under the railway bridge and up the hill. Traffic is normally slow & friendly (?) here.
At pedestrian crossing cross to Mount bBank, then take the footpath downhill past the Garage.
Turn R through gap in hedge and up grassy slope to Coningsby Bank
Just before the first house on right, turn R onto the path downhill past the playground.
Narrow track through bushes to bridge under the railway.
Turn L up Gorham Drive
When the road turns R, continue on the path L and ahead.
By the railway crossing go ahead and down between the trees
Pass the buildings and join Cottonmill Lane.
Turn L into Old London Rd and immediately R into Keyfield Terrace
A good place to stop!
