The way points of this bicycle route:
Start point
Split right here onto Bridleway
Bear right here away from FP to top of Sharphaw
You'll be back here later. Or you could just do half the Big Eight.
Tough going here - it's a bit cut up by motorbikes
Just... keeps... climbing
Take a break - back onto tarmac for a while
Get a good run up here back onto the rough stuff
Join up with Masitles Lane here
Pass thru the remains of a Roman Fort here. You'll probably be going at a fair pace at this point!
Cross the stream here (old bridge provided if too deep)
Back onto sealed surface. Watch out for mass hoards of red-socks around these parts!
Take a detour to Malham Tarn, or stop for an ice cream if the weather's good
Left onto Bridleway, take care not to take the footpath
Over the crest - this bit is like a mini ski-run down the road
Join road, watch out for walkers and badly parked cars
Anyone for cooked brakes?
The temptation here is to blast down the road into Malham. Don't - there's a great rocky bridleway here.
Ideal time for a pint
19 miles in - legs aching yet? This is where I usually hit 'the wall'
A pretty village of houses we can't afford. Never mind, there's no pub anyway
You could close the loop here or find the sneaky singletrack bridleway to Rylstone
Old Bridge. Use your trials skills to clear it without a foot down - can be slippery when wet!
Take a minute by the duckpond to contemplate the climb ahead
Through the gate and off the main road
Left through the gate, deep breath, push on
It's a beast of a climb
One big heave here will see you over the worst, slog on
This bit is do-able, just!
River crossing coming up - it's way too deep in winter, bear left and seek a way round where it's narrower
Summit point, cracking downhill ahead. Most walkers will be coming towards you, but cover the brakes just in case
Straight across between to gate posts (no gate)
Can get a bit swampy down here
Careful on the main road. There is a fp through the tree running parallel to the road - but I never told you that :)
Right turn onto bw. An old trade route into Skipton
Expect plenty of slop in winter, if you've done the whole 35 miles to this point it may just break you!
Super technical decent, rocks, boulders, tree routes, used syringes, tramps, sciving schoolkids on mopeds - it's got the lot
Back into Skipton, you've earned your fish and chips... and cake!
Turn right opposite the railway station for a leisurely climb through the park
