The way points of this bicycle route:

Pioneer Square

Start at Zeitgeist Coffee in Pioneer Square. The Seattle ferry terminal is a few blocks northwest, King St train station is just around the corner. After coffee, head east on Jackson st.

R on 5th ave S

Uwajimaya on your right - stock up on tasty Asian groceries.

SODO

Bear L on Airport Way S Airport Way can be busy, and the pavement is pretty beat up, but it's usually wide enough. There aren't a lot of great alternatives that are as direct.

Georgetown

Boeing Field on your right, BNSF railroad main line and Interstate 5 on your left. A world of mechanized transportation.

L on Norfolk St, at the end of the Boeing Field runway.

L on E Marginal Wy; busy, but only for one short block.

R on S 102nd st

Cross the hard-working Duwamish River.

Pick up the Green River trail on your left just before the Hwy 99 entrance. Now a break from traffic for a good long while!

Cross the Green River on the trail

Tukwila

Cross the river again, following the river.

Still following the lovely Green River trail, passing office parks, industry, and a few bits of

L at Interurban Ave; the trail is a glorified sidewalk through here.

Follow trail L away from Interurban.

Cross Green R again into Fort Dent Park

Leave park by main entrance.

Pick up trail again on L at Interurban.

Very brief sidewalk interlude to get under the freeway.

Enter Interurban Trail just after passing under I-405.

Kent

Cross Green River as the Interurban Trail continues past Kent

Auburn

Cross W Main St, downtown Auburn is to your left.

Pacific

End of Interurban Trail. R on 3rd ave, cross under Hwy 167.

L on W Valley Hwy

The West Valley Hwy is nice through here; bypassed by the new divided highway on your left, and not built-up, for a surprisingly rural feeling.

Sumner

L across railroad tracks into Sumner

L after the tracks

Continue through Sumner on Main St.

R on Valley Ave

Cross under Hwy 410; becomes SR162.

R on Pioneer Wy after crossing the Puyallup River. If you don't mind the traffic (which isn't bad), stay on 162; we're just making a detour to pick up the Foothills trail.

L after 500m onto the Foothills Trail, a nice rail-trail that will take us south to Orting.

Cross Orting Hwy; SR162 is close on our left now; a convenient place to switch between the highway and the trail, if you'd like.

Recross Puyallup River. Restrooms at the trailhead parking lot here.

Orting

Entering Orting; most services.

R off the trail at SR162 (River St). Follow SR162 out of town.

R at Orville Rd toward Electron. Here we pick up a commonly-used Seattle Randonneurs route; credit to them.

Kawpowsin

L at four-way-stop to follow Orville Rd E.

Lake Kapowsin on your left.

L onto SR161.

Eatonville

Some services here. Continue straight through town on SR161.

L on SR 7 (Mountain Hwy), following signs for Mount Rainier.

Campground on your right.

Caution: Really bad railroad tracks here - go slow!

Elbe

R in Elbe to follow SR7 across the Nisqually River.

I spent a Pleasant evening camped in the bushes somewhere around here.

Cross a minor pass here, spin downhill.

Morton

Entering Morton past not one but two lumber mills. Nice coffee shop down the main street to your right as you come into town. Large supermarket a little further down SR 7.

L onto US 12 as you leave Morton. Busy but with a luxurious shoulder.

Up up up.

Randle

R on SR131 (Cispus Rd). Small grocery store on the corner. This is your last store until Northwoods, about 50 mi away.

Cross Cowlitz River; RV park on your left has water and laundry.

Road heads uphill, becomes Forest Rd 25 as we enter Gifford Pinchot NF; follow signs for Mt. St. Helens/Cougar. This is where it gets beautiful.

Iron Creek Campground on your left; best bet for water for quite a while. Elevation 1083 feet.

Junction with FR99 to the Windy Ridge viewpoint; I haven't climbed it, but I hear it's beautiful.

Elk Pass - elev 4048 ft; this is the high point between Randle and Northwoods.

Cross Muddy River

L on FR 90 (towards Carson). You could continue straight to (eventually) get to I-5 between Vancouver and Longview.

Cross Lewis River; Swift Creek Reservoir visible through the trees to the right.

Northwoods

Small Northwoods store on the left. Next store is 20+ miles.

Curly Creek CG on your left.

R on Curly Creek Road (FR 51). Start climbing; this is a steep one.

Top of the major climb. Nice viewpoint here.

R onto Wind River Rd (FR 30)

Oldman Pass - snow-park on your right. Check your brakes for the descent.

Paradise Creek campground on your left.

L at Mineral Springs Rd to stay on Wind River Road.

Large fish hatchery on your right; neat exhibits and worth checking out.

Carson

Wind River Market grocery on your right; post office and limited other services here in Carson.

Carson Hot Springs down the road to your left; heard it's a great resort and a nice place for a soak.

R on SR14, which follows the Columbia River into Vancouver. It's busy and hilly, but mostly okay.

Stevenson

Stevenson has all kinds of services spread out along the main drag through town.

Bridge of the Gods on your left would take you across into Cascade Locks, Oregon; but stay straight, we'll stay in Washington for a little while longer.

Bonneville Dam on your left. This is the furthest-downstream of the Columbia's many dams.

Beacon Rock State Park. A climb up the rock (on your feet, not your bike) gives great views of the Gorge. State Park campground up the hill to your right.

One of the steeper, longer, climbs up from the river.

Washougal

R onto Evergreen Hwy as we enter Washougal.

Central Washougal has all services.

Camas

Following the Evergreen Hwy soon takes us into Camas on 3rd Ave.

R on Birch St, through Camas's pretty downtown.

L on 6th ave, soon passing the huge papermill that dominates the town.

L on Ivy St - the first left after the mill - to get off busy 6th st.

Straight on 5th ave.

L on Evergreen Hwy, crossing the limited-access highway on a bridge.

Continue on the old Evergreen Hwy. It's noisy because of the nearby SR14, but not very busy.

Vancouver

Now entering suburban Vancouver. This is the swanky Fisher's Landing area.

Cross under I-205; we'll circle around to get on the bike path crossing this bridge shortly. Continue on Evergreen Hwy.

R on SE Ellsworth Rd, up a short hill.

First R on SE 23rd st, before you cross the highway.

Bike path entrance at end of 23rd st.

Bike path climbs into the median of I-205. This is about as noisy as a bike path could be.

Cross the Glenn Jackson I-205 Bridge on the bike path; there's a steep climb at first, then a gentle descent the rest of the way.

Welcome to Oregon!

Crossing Government Island; sadly there's no legal way to get off the freeway to check out the island.

Portland

Bike path junction; head right to continue next to the freeway into town.
