The way points of this bicycle route:
White Oaks Neighborhood of San Carlos: streets are homey and quiet but there are no bike lanes
San Carlos/Redwood City border
Lovely older homes in this part of Wellesly Crescent neighborhood.
Whipple Ave is busy but it has wide shoulders.
Helpful 4-way stop for making the turn across the intersection
NW Redwood City: Pretty neighborhoods. Hopkins Ave has great bike lanes if you want to shift up or down a block or two here. All the cross streets starting with G through M (Grand through Myrtle) are pleasant.
Helpful 4-way stop at King and Brewster
Myrtle street is a pleasant choice here.
Turn onto the SIDEWALK from Myrtle to Jefferson. There is no room to ride safely on Jefferson Ave here!
Use traffic light by John Gill Elementary school to cross busy/speedy Jefferson Ave.
Use walkways around playing fields/tennis courts to bike through Red Morton park/community center
The SE half of Redwood City is not nearly as picturesque as the NW half. Sierra St is much safer/quieter than Valota Rd but you could also use Virginia Ave for a prettier ride in this section.
Valota Road is a handy way to traverse the more modest part of Redwood City but it's well traveled so watch for traffic.
Woodside Road is a major artery with lots of traffic. Crossing is possible only at traffic lights.
Redwood City/Atherton border. There is a 4-way stop at Selby and West Selby. Note there are multiple streets named "Selby" around here and they are not extensions of each other. Selby and W Selby are perpendicular. There is a cul-de-sac off of Selby Ln that is also called "Selby Ln", it's a bit odd.
Atherton roads traverse beautiful wooded neighborhoods but shoulders are unreliable and there are no bike lanes.
Atherton is a town of stately homes with no commerical section at all.
Barry Ln is curvy and quite narrow, be careful.
Circus Club Polo Grounds
You may have to use the pedestrian walkways to cross Valparaiso Ave.
West Menlo Park neighborhoods are quiet suburbs with nicely kept ranch style homes.
Cars on busy Santa Cruz Ave only stop for pedestrians in walkways, there is no light or stop sign here.
Residential Menlo Park
Lovely bike/pedestrian bridge over San Francisquito Creek between Menlo Park and Stanford
New Stanford Apartments
Bike friendly Stanford!
Bike friendly Stanford campus
Cottage-y Stanford residential neighborhood
Traffic light
Bike/pedestrian bath exit/entrance
Lovely bike/pedestrian path between Gunn High School/Barron Park neighborhoods
This path is flatter than the one that runs along the other side of Gunn HS campus.
Long traffic light sequence at Arastradero/Foothill Expwy
