The way points of this bicycle route:
Starting from the skate park, left onto Belmore Rd North.
Left onto the ramp to the M5 westbound.
Use the breakdown lane. Unfortuantely it often has alot of debri, glass and wire from blown out tyres, so its tough on your tyres. Kevlar belted tyres or some form of puncture protection is a must.
M5 crosses Salt Pan Creek.
Cross the exit ramp. If this is your first time cycling on a motorway be aware that the vehicles are moving much faster than you are used to. Have a good hard look over your shoulder to make sure its safe to cross. The breakdown lane is only about a metre wide right here.
M5 passes under Fairford Rd. Pigeons love living under here, theres often a couple of dead ones on the road that have fallen off the perch too.
Cross the entry ramp. As before, take care crossing.
M5 passes under Gibson Ave.
M5 passes under Mackenzie St footbridge.
Exit the M5 at the River Rd ramp.
Toll booth. Yep, no charge for bikes. Be aware that if you pass the gate just after a vehicle has paid but before they go through, the gate can come down before they go through! This can make for a not so happy motorist who thinks you've bludged their toll money you cycling fiend. Endless amusing arguements can ensue at the next intersection. So I pace going through to so it doesn't cause any problems.
Right into River Rd at the traffic lights.
Traffic lights, continue along River Rd.
Left into Milperra Rd at the traffic lights. Milperra Rd has lots of fast traffic. This is a route I sometimes use early morning about 6:15am or earlier, even then its busy. Its not pleasant but its fast. If you want a quieter route to Henry Lawson Dr use Beaconsfield St, Horsley Rd, Bullecourt Ave.
Traffic lights at intersection of Milperra Rd, Edgar St and Queen St. Continue along Milperra Rd. May 2008, some of Milperra Rd is still getting resurfced, so there may be no lines, also at night the road may be reduced to one lane, 40k.
Traffic lights at intersection of Milperra Rd with Marigold St, continue along Milperra Rd.
Traffic lights, continue along Milperra Rd.
Traffic lights at intersection of Milperra Rd with Ashford Ave, continue along Milperra Rd.
Traffic lights at intersection of Milperra rd with Murray Jones Dr, continue along Milperra Rd.
Traffic lights, cross Henry Lawson Dr.
Milperra Bridge over the Georges River. Milperra Rd becomes Newbridge Rd.
Hard left after crossing Milperra Bridge, watch out for large pot holes if you swing wide. We want to get to Rickard Rd. Weekdays at peak times its no right turn from Newbridge Rd to Rickard Rd.
Road ends, use the path that passes under Milperra Bridge.
Path turns left away from river just after going under Milperra Bridge.
To your right is a large lilly-pilly.
Veer right onto Rickard Rd, watch for turning traffic.
Left into Arthur St. Its common to see rabbits, sometimes foxes and snakes on the road from here on.
"Road Closed" signs and barriers. July 2009 the concrete barrier has been given a nudge so its no longer necessary to dismount to get through. Wild roses and blackberries are on your right.
Follow the road to the west. May 2008 the road is badly potholed from here to Riverside Dr. This area used to be market gardens. There is also a dirt track leading north through the scrub to a path around the small lake to the north.
Intersection with Riverside Dr. There are riberries next to the baseball fields carpark a couple of hundred metres north.
