The way points of this bicycle route:
Intersection of Washington Ave and Belmore Rd North.
Traffic lights, turn right into Hannans Rd.
Traffic lights at intersection of Bonds Rd, continue along Hannans Rd.
Roundabout at intersection with Karne St, continue along Hannans Rd.
Traffic lights at intersection with Penshurst Rd, continue along Hannans Rd. Narwee station is on your right, pub, 7-11, takeaway etc are to your left. Theres more shops on the southern side of the railway.
Traffic lights at intersection of Hannans Rd, Kardella Crescent and Broad Arrow Rd. Continue ahead along Hannans Rd.
Theres a metal plate on the road just near the corner, its slippery in the wet. Watch out for cars cutting you off at the corner as well. Uphill from here to King Georges Rd. Hannans Rd becomes Broad Arrow Rd. September 2008 the magpie is back! From September to December theres a magpie that swoops at cyclists between here and Welfare Ave.
Traffic lights. Broad Arrow Rd finishes, cross King Georges Rd, head into Ponyara Rd.
Pedestrian crossing, road narrowing.
Left into Yarallah Pl. Road surface just around the corner is starting to break up.
Pedestrian crossing, broad speed hump, ok on a bike.
Go around to the right. Watchout for cars behind that may assume you will go straight ahead like most cars do. From here to Earlwood shops its quiet back streets and path.
Left into Tallawalla St. Its downhill from here to the bike path.
Beware of cars crossing Tallawalla at the intersection with Pallamana Pde and Kirrang St. Sometimes they head across without even slowing down.
Turn left off Tallawalla Rd onto the path where the bollards are.
Ahead of you in a wide underpass of the M5East, we aren't going to use it.
Right to follow the path on the southern side of the M5East. Keep an eye out for foxes early in the morning. Ducks sleep amongst the reeds in the creek.
To your right is a bridge across Wolli Creek to link with the The Crescent to the south.
Top of a small hill. Its mostly downhill from here to Kingsgrove Rd. In the mornings there is normally a group of about a dozen young magpies here.
Continue straight ahead. Karingal St underpass is on your left. March 2007, the bridge to the south across Wolli Creek to Commercial Rd is still closed. September 2007 still closed.
Turn left where the path reaches Kingsgrove Rd to head north under the M5East.
Cross Kingsgrove Rd at the lights under the bridge to continue using the path on the southern side of the M5East.
Path continues from here. There is another route on the northern side of the M5East, but it has more on-road, hills and road crossings, this one is path all the way to Bexley Rd.
Continue straight ahead. Arinya St underpass is on your left, bridge to Kooreela St is on your right.
Bridge to Bonalbo St is on your right.
Lundy Ave underpass is on your left. Gross pollutant trap is on your right, ducks like sleeping on it.
Turn sharp right, follow the path to use the bridge over Bexley Rd.
Bexley North railway station is just south-east of here.
Follow the path to the right up Wolli Ave. Get into low gear, theres a short steep climb for a hundred metres or so.
Leave the path, get onto Wolli Ave and head up hill. Lookout for buses from both left and right.
Whistle to the cockatoo on your left. It normally screeches back. You are past the steep bit, road is still climbing.
Hill flattens out here at the fork in the road, veer right to keep following Wolli Ave.
Watch out for this manhole cover that sticks up out of the road, it could puncture your tubes and smash the rims on a road bike if you hit it hard.
Left into Airedale Ave.
Follow the road around to the right, Airedale Ave becomes Morgan St.
Roundabout, turn right. Look out, many vehicles speed through it along Homer St.
Signalised pedestrian crossing, road narrowing.
Traffic lights at the intersection of Homer, William and Hartill-Law. Continue along Homer St. Theres often alot of traffic here, but we turn off it soon.
Turn left just before the traffic lights. We want to head to Earlwood Ave. The clods at the council put in traffic calming devices to discourage cars using Earlwood Ave but didn't think to still allow cyclists to go that way legally to access the councils own marked bike route . So we are going to do this stupid little U-turn dance.
Pedestrian crossing. Yep I know I could just go straight up into Earlwood Ave here by riding across the pedestrian crossing (tsk tsk) but I find it safer to just go along Clarke St....
Do a U-turn...
Turn left into Earlwood Ave. Thanks heaps car-centric road designers. On a happier note theres coffee shops, pub and ATM nearby. Also Coles just to the west is supposed to be getting bike parking installed as part of the carpark getting rebuilt.
Its downhill from here to the Cooks River.
Roundabout at intersection with Hamilton Ave, continue ahead along Earlwood Ave.
Roundabout, turn right into Fricourt Ave.
Roundabout, veer left to Hamel Cr.
At the end of Hamel Cr veer left to use the footpath to get to Wardell Rd
Cross Wardell Rd using the refuge just north of the roundabout.
Left into Bass Rd at the roundabout.
Stop sign, turn right into Riverview Rd.
Roundabout, veer left into Homer St. Beware of traffic moving fast coming down the hill on Homer St.
Roundabout, turn right into Undercliffe Rd. This is a reverse camber so be careful in the wet. Adora Chocolates is just NE.
Undercliffe Rd ends, veer right onto the path through Gough Whitlam Park.
Casuarina needles and seeds often collect at this corner which can make it slippery.
Path intersection, continue ahead.
The carpark has some cruddy wood barriers around it, theres some gaps you can cycle through.
Left into Bayview Ave. The recently repaired Canterbury Velodrome is just east of here over the other side of Bayview Ave in Waterworth Park.
The road narrows on the bridge as it crosses the Cooks River. Its best to pick up speed and take a lane. Don't be surprised if some idiot overtakes over double white lines and around the curve up ahead. Bayview Ave becomes Richardson Crescent.
Get into the right turn lane (keeping in mind speeding idiots).
Right into Tempe Station carpark at the traffic lights.
Organised rides often meet here at the bottom of the steps to Tempe Station.
At the south end of the carpark get onto the path.
The path under the railway can be submerged by high tides, and this corner is slippery when wet. Slow down, use your bell or horn.
Veer left, head to the road/carpark on the northern edge of Kendrick Park. Casuarina needles on the path can make it slippery. Pelicans often sleep on the island to your right. Theres shelters, tables, seating, water in Kendrick Park.
Use the crossing at the traffic lights to cross Princes Hwy.
On the eastern side of Princes Hwy use the path which veers left to get onto Holbeach Ave. Check for traffic.
From May 2008 work has begun on the desal pipeline, so we can't use the path around the north of Tempe Reserve. Continue ahead along Holbeach Ave.
Left at the end of Holbeach Ave, then through the carpark.
Turn left onto path at eastern end of carpark. The desal pipeline construction means the gates are closed on thje road ahead July 2008. A new path is finished to your left (not shown on the satellite image yet) to use to get to the bridge over Alexandra Canal.
New path is finished from here to the bridge over Alexandra Canal.
May 2008 desal pipeline work has fenced off access to the other path around the north of Tempe Reserve.
Cross Alexandra Canal. The large gates before the bridge are typically locked but there is an opening for peds and cyclists to get through. Theres often cormorants and sometimes pelicans along the canal. People often fish from this bridge at night.
Turn left onto the bike path that runs between Alexandra Canal and Airport Drive. Look out for other fast moving cyclists before you turn. And rabbits, they love burrowing in the sandy soil.
Bolts protrude up from the path adjacent Link Rd. There used to be a bollard there.
This point is in line with the runway just south, so its not unusual for there to be plane spotters here getting a whiff of jet fuel from the low flying planes. If there are people here SLOW-DOWN. Be aware that they may be in a state of aircraft induced bliss and not really functioning properly.
Watch out for more plane spotters just ahead.
The path goes under the railway. Beware that a shallow pool of rainwater can collect under here and some moron keeps putting bricks and bits of wood in it to use as stepping stones.
Path turns right away from Alexandra Canal towards Coward St. Watch out for cyclists coming the other way.
Cross the entrance to Caterair to get to Coward St. Watch out for other vehicles here.
Coward St can be busy. If the traffic really bothers you there is a shared ped/bike path on its southern side. If you use the path keep your speed down, theres lots of vehicle entrances across it, be ready to hit the brakes. I find its safer to use the road.
Traffic lights at intersection with Kent St, continue along Coward St. Road surface is lumpy on the far side of the intersection.
Traffic lights at entrance to QCA and QCB. Continue along Coward St. Start looking at getting into the right lane.
Traffic lights, turn right into Bourke Rd. Mascot station entrance is just north in Bourke St.
Stay in the right lane, turning right at the next traffic lights.
Right at traffic lights at entrance to QCA and QCB carparks.
Left just before the carpark entrance, then under the bridge towards QCD.
Right towards QCD.
Arrive at QCD.
