Traffic lights at intersection of Hannans Rd, Kardella Crescent and Broad Arrow Rd. Continue ahead along Hannans Rd.
Theres a metal plate on the road just near the corner, its slippery in the wet. Watch out for cars cutting you off at the corner as well. Uphill from here to King Georges Rd. Hannans Rd becomes Broad Arrow Rd. September 2007 theres a magpie that swoops at cyclists between here and Welfare Ave.
Traffic lights at top of hill. Broad Arrow Rd finishes, cross King Georges Rd, head into Ponyara Rd.
Speed hump, no problems for a bike though.
Pedestrian crossing, road narrowing.
Left into Yarallah Pl. Road surface just around the corner is starting to break up.

Left into Tallawalla St. Its downhill from here to the bike path.
Beware of cars crossing Tallawalla at the intersection with Pallamana Pde and Kirrang St. Sometimes they head across without even slowing down.
Turn left off Tallawalla Rd onto the path where the bollards are.
Ahead of you in a wide underpass of the M5East, we aren't going to use it.
Right to follow the path on the southern side of the M5East.
To your right is a bridge across Wolli Creek to link with the The Crescent to the south.
Top of a small hill. Its mostly downhill from here to Kingsgrove Rd. In the mornings there is normally a group of about a dozen young magpies here.
Continue straight ahead. Karingal St underpass is on your left. March 2007, the bridge to the south across Wolli Creek to Commercial Rd is still closed. May 2008 still closed.

Follow the path to the right towards Wolli Ave. Get into low gear, theres a short steep climb for a hundred metres or so.
Leave the path, get onto Wolli Ave and head up hill. Lookout for buses from both left and right.
Whistle to the cockatoo on your left. It normally screeches back. You are past the steep bit, road is still climbing.
Hill flattens out here at the fork in the road, veer right to keep following Wolli Ave.
Watch out for this manhole cover that sticks up out of the road, it could puncture your tubes and smash the rims on a road bike if you hit it hard.
Left into Airedale Ave.
Follow the road around to the right, Airedale Ave becomes Morgan St.
Roundabout, turn right. Look out, many vehicles speed through it along Homer St.
Signalised pedestrian crossing, road narrowing.
Traffic lights at the intersection of Homer, William and Hartill-Law. Continue along Homer St. These lights can be hard to trigger, you'll need to get your bike in the centre of the lane. Theres often alot of traffic here, but we turn off it soon.
Turn left just before the traffic lights. We want to head to Earlwood Ave. The clods at the council put in traffic calming devices to discourage cars using Earlwood Ave but didn't think to still allow cyclists to go that way legally to access the councils own marked bike route . So we are going to do this stupid little U-turn dance.
Pedestrian crossing. Yep I know I could just go straight up into Earlwood Ave here by riding across the pedestrian crossing (tsk tsk) but I find it safer to just go along Clarke St....
Do a U-turn...
Turn left into Earlwood Ave. Thanks heaps car-centric road designers. Theres cafes, shops, pub and ATM nearby.

The carpark has some cruddy wood barriers around it, theres some gaps you can cycle through.
Left into Bayview Ave. The recently repaired Canterbury Velodrome is just east of here over the other side of Bayview Ave in Waterworth Park.
The road narrows on the bridge as it crosses the Cooks River. Its best to pick up speed and take a lane. Don't be surprised if some idiot overtakes over double white lines and around the curve up ahead. Bayview Ave becomes Richardson Crescent.
Lets assume your going to meet someone else at Tempe. Get into the right turn lane (keeping in mind speeding idiots).
Right into the Tempe Station carpark at the traffic lights.

A combination of very heavy rain and high tide can put this part of the path underwater.
Just to your left is one of the few bits of the Cooks River left with sand on it.
Path goes under a huge pipeline. Do you really want to know whats in it? Its not drinking water...and it would smell alot if it burst.
Route continues through carpark. Theres toilets, water, tables, seats and wood BBQ just to the north. Steel Park cafe is in the sports complex to the NE, Adora Chocolates over the bridge to the SW.
After the carpark the path turns left. Path narrows.

Tight turns again.
Left after crossing the Cooks River, keep following the path upstream.
Route crosses the end of Foord Ave. Another bridge over the Cooks River is to your left.

Turn right about 3/4 the way up the lane. Follow the bike route sign.
Left into Rawson St.
Traffic lights. We want to turn right here. But its no right turn here. And the left lane is left turn only. So you might want to cross Rawson St at the lights as a pedestrian, then continue cycling along Station Rd. Or get into the right lane, then do a hook turn into Station St, whatever you think is safest.
Right to head into Station St.

Path goes under the M4.
On the northern side of the M4 is a seperate ped/bike bridge that crosses James Ruse Dr.
Path goes under the M4. From here to Woodville Rd the path is mostly directly underneath the M4 so GPS reception is poor, and the path is rarely visible in the satellite images, so the path position is a guestimate.
Cross Arthur St underneath the M4. Continue along the path beneath the M4.
Cross Alfred St underneath the M4 and continue along the path. If you want a feed, Elizabeth Farm is about a km north of here (follow Alfred St then right into Alice St), their cafe does good coffee and scones, you can bring your bikes into the courtyard.

Turn left just after the small bridge over Prospect Creek.
Path goes under The Horsley Drive.
Path ends, route continues through the carpark.
Turn left before Fairfield Station, leave the carpark and turn right into Fairfield St.
Roundabout, turn left into Vine St. We are leaving the Parramatta to Liverpool Railtrail.

Turn left at path T-intersection to follow Prospect creek downstream. To your north is a bridge across Prospect Creek. We are going to head the other way downstream.
Nearby is a map of bike routes. Its a bit old and faded.
Cross Liverpool Rd city-bound lanes at the lights. To your right is Prospect Creek and Lansdowne Bridge.
Cross Liverpool Rd Liverpool-bound lanes at the lights. To your right is Prospect Creek and Lansdowne Bridge.
This route uses the path through Mirrambeena Regional Park. Be aware that the speed limit for cyclists is at most 20km and sometimes 10km. And cyclists are banned from many of the paths leading off this route. Its much preferable than using Henry Lawson Dr though.
Nearby is a shelter and bike racks (why do they put bikes racks in places like this but not outside shopping centres?)
Right at the path T-intersection.
Bridge.
Right.
Short steep climb ahead.
The map incorrectly shows Hazel St extending to near here. Keep following the path downstream besides Prospect Creek.
From here to the crossing of Henry Lawson Dr theres lots of turns and paths leading off. Follow the main path keeping Lake Gillawarna on your left.
Lake Gillawarna is coming up on your left.
Seats, shelter and water are nearby. This route describes a way over the new bike/ped bridge over Henry Lawson Dr and around the western edge of Bankstown Airport. Alternatively there is a new bit of path besides Henry Lawson Dr that makes it easier to get to the Kentucky Reserve path to the intersection of Henry Lawson Dr and Tower Rd.
The street map doesn't show it (satellite image now does), there is a new ped/bike bridge over Henry Lawson Drive. The ramp up to it starts here.
That path you can see leading to the east is a route to Dunc Gray Velodrome.
Ramp down from the bridge finishes here.
Left into Georges Cr.
Roundabout, left into Birdwood Rd. Shops are nearby.
Right across Birdwood Rd towards Birdwood Park. Across the park to Link Rd is grass, no path.
There is a small bridge across the ditch to get to Link Rd.
Right into Link Rd. Speed limit along here is 40km.
Link Rd becomes Tower Rd at the intersection with Rabaul Rd. Map incorrectly shows Tower Rd as Perimeter Rd.
Traffic on Link Rd is normally OK, occassionally you'll get an impatient driver on your arse. Lots of skydiving, learn-to-fly, and workshops along here. In summer the huge water-bombing helicopters are based nearby. Nervous flyers should probably not look at the condition of some of the planes along here.
Roundabout. Aldi, fast food and access to the museum are off to your left.
Left into Henry Lawson Dr at the traffic lights. Henry Lawson Dr has lots of traffic. There is a bike lane for a short section. Its best to move fast here before the traffic catches up with you from the lights changing.
Yep, if you are not used to riding in lots of traffic this can be disconcerting. The bike lane is in the middle of the road. You are moving fast aren't you?
Traffic lights, cross Milperra Rd. Continue along Henry Lawson Dr.
Henry Lawson Dr has a sealed shoulder till the next bridge.
Road narrows at bridge. If you can't speed up and merge with the traffic to take a lane its safest to just wait for a break to get across. There is a footpath on the NW side but you'd still have to cross Henry Lawson Dr to get to it. Shoulder on the far side of the bridge is unsealed.
There is a broad shoulder but it is unsealed and loose and rough, lots of debri.
Veer left off Henry Lawson Dr, head across the grass to use Ingram Ave. Watch for soft surface and tree branches. You could just continue along Henry Lawson Dr then turn left into Bullecourt Ave at the lights instead.
Use the footpath to get to Bullecourt Ave from Ingram Ave. Watch for traffic coming round the corner.
Get onto Bullecourt Ave.

Watch out you don't get squeezed here near the right turn lane into the uni.
Roundabout, turn right into Horsley Rd.
Roundabout, turn left into Beaconsfield St.
Intersection of Beaconsfield St and Marigold St. For some reason I can't fathom, lots of car drivers seem unable to see a cyclist approaching in clear view from the west, and will pull out in front of you. Continue along Beaconsfield St.
Theres a pedestrian crossing and some small islands in front of you. To your right is a footpath to Wall Ave to the south. Continue along Beaconsfield St.
Traffic lights, cross Queen St. Continue along Beaconsfield St.
Traffic lights. Cross River Rd into Doyle Rd.
Roundabout, veer right to continue along Doyle Rd.

Bike lockers are on your left.
Roundabout, continue into Ryan Rd.
Traffic lights, cross Davies Rd to Trevone St.
Use lane at the end of Trevone St. Surface is grass, sometimes slippery in the wet, lookout for the manhole cover and spiders webs at night during summer. Theres often a flock of magpies around (and so far they haven´t taken to dive bombing people).
Left onto the Salt Pan Creek path. Path is unsealed here but normally in good condition.
Path reaches the eastern end of Meagher Ave. Head to the right towards the Salt Pan Creek boardwalk. Boardwalk can be slippery in the wet. Be aware that bikes are banned from being ridden on the boardwalk :-( . I still ride it, pull up for pedestrians.
Tight corner, path then goes under railway. People often fish here (don't eat the fish).
Right to use the bridge to cross Salt Pan Creek. There are about three steps up here, or a wheelchair ramp with tight turns. If you turned left instead and followed the boardwalk it takes you further up Salt Pan Creek and eventually a route to Bankstown.
This route continues straight ahead. If you want, there is a boardwalk that leads off to your left, NW to seats, shelter, BBQ and water, then William Rd and Riverwood Park.
Left into Henry Rd.
Henry Rd becomes William Rd at the corner. Seats, shelter, BBQ and water are off to your left.
Cafes, shops and takeaways are nearby. On the southern side of Riverwood Station are Peter Bundys bike shop (reopened Set 2007), toilets, taxi rank, Coles and Woolies, takeaways and Belmontes Pizza (good, has outdoor seating).
