The way points of this bicycle route:
A short (0.5km @ 9%) hill into the village of Hurtmore to warm the legs up for the day, then a tunnel under the A3 and onto the picturesque village of Shackleford.
Ancient Saxon village.
A pleasant, rolling, quiet and quick section for 6km before climbing again (1.6km @ 3-4%) just after Weston Patrick into Herriard.
Spot the airfield covered in gliders and an array of World War II planes.
Another short climb (1.1km @ 2-3%) to today's highest point.
off to the left, these masts are at 225m. Now for a fun, wooded descent through Lower Froyle.
The land of imposing detached houses and rhododendrons - well it is the land of both architect Edwin Lutyens and landscape gardener partner in crime Gertrude Jekyll. This now sees a succession of gruelling ups and downs all the way back to Godalming.

An EXPERT ride in an area through the idylls and airfields that surround the town of Gadalming (NB The first town in the world to have electric public street lighting). Not renown for easy, traffic free riding - the area is criss-crossed by major arterial roads from London and between major towns of the area. But this ride should allow you to find the home counties idyll that so inspired poet laureate John betjeman nd is epitomised in his poem 'A Subaltern's Love-song. Given good weather you too can become 'furnish'd' and burnish'd' by the same sun that rendered Miss J Hunter Dunn so beautiful.
